Can a native speaker tell me if the word "discrimination" is supposed to carry a negative connotation? The word seems to have a different meaning today.
I've always thought "to discriminate" is a very neutral verb, I thought it just meant "to distinguish"; maybe it's connected etymologically to "describe".
Discriminate
dis·crim·i·nate
dəˈskriməˌnāt/
verb
1.
recognize a distinction; differentiate.
"babies can discriminate between different facial expressions of emotion"
synonyms: differentiate, distinguish, draw a distinction, tell the difference, tell apart; More
2.
make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.
"existing employment policies discriminate against women"
synonyms: be biased against, be prejudiced against; More
As far as I know, yeah. It's supposed to be negative.
Edit: Guess that's one definition for it then, according to the above post
Thanks!
Hmm, I still probably wouldn't use the word "discriminate" when talking about, for example babies telling the difference between facial expressions.
I guess its preference, Ive seen it being used that way and Id also use it , at least if nothing else is on the tip of my tongue.
Yeah, the context will give it away when you choose to use it anyway.

I can see why you're a propane addict, because that was a sick burn achievable only with an adiabatic flame temperature of 1980°C.
I'm sure it's nothing that a quick Google search can't fix...
