You could just install Linux and edit text files with WordStar 4.0 and still browse the web with.
Why not just use a basic text editor which doesn't have a spell checker?
You think his productivity would be higher since he has no distractions on that DOS. Unless he's playing Leisure Suit Larry or something like that.

Why go through that effort when he is happy with what he has?

I have a feeling this is more to do with just being one of the computer users who has had an old computer for so long it's the only thing they're used to
Hahahah I kind of love the idea that he typed all of Game of Thrones on a DOS computer
I often find using a basic text editor to be less distracting than something with a bunch of bells and whistles related to formatting and corrections built in so I kind of see where he is coming from.
FocusWriter is a favourite of mine http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/ for actual writing.

A floppy [del]dick[/del] disk?
A floppy [del]dick[/del] disk?
No, its disconnected from the internet. And a floppy disc, I bet modern viruses cant even fit in them anymore.

He is also probably just using the same computer he used when he started writing the saga.
This explains all the typos I found in the books
And the system remained in widespread use up to around the turn of the century - but some already considered it outdated by the time Martin's first instalment in the series was published in 1996.
I guess he has a lot in common with the BBC :v:

You'd think he'd still have someone checking the books before they're published.
hey look it's MIPS'/Pentium's dad
fair enough if he doesn't want to switch, if it works for him, it works, but he needs to realise that you can usually turn stuff like AutoCorrect etc. off with a few clicks

I always got confused by the 'Ser' thing, until I actually saw one of the books and figured it out
You'd think he'd still have someone checking the books before they're published.
I can only assume there was such an enormous amount of them that a few slipped through the publisher's net.
If all he does is word processing then I'll mail him one of my selectric typewriters.

Out of the three books I've read I've only seen about two spelling mistakes.
Also those fucking suspenders.

Or don't :P
I'm more worried his DOS machine stops working and he loses all his stuff. The article doesn't say but how old could his DOS machine be? Computers can work for a long time but this is ridiculous.
"Oh, I don't have it connected to the internet, I'm safe."

Dont tell him about the Olympic AIDS.
I'd use google drive just because of the cloud feature. It saved my ass when I had written half of a long ass paper and the startup files on my main drive got corrupted and I had to wipe it and lose everything I had ever created
