ok guys, i know how much you all like to shout at each other so i bring you a killer topic that will make your lungs burst from laughing and raging at me knowing nothing about PC's i have a 7 year old computer, and everything lags to shit we are talking GM_flatgrass will crash my computer if it's not in the mood to play (and yes it does.. i'm not making that up to make it sound worse.. it will do that) so yeah... thats bad here's my specs straight from the properties tab from "my computer" xp service pack 3 version 2002 Dell dimension 3100 DV051 intel (R) celeron (R) CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz 504mb of ram physical address extension i have roughtly £300 for either a new one or a upgrade.. so help me facepunch, what should i do..
First off, if you have a dell, im assuming its in the OEM case, most OEM cases do not have a front intake fan slot, reducing the airflow by a lot. This means you really cant put a really nice graphics card in there, or a nice processor because they would generate too much heat. Secondly, if the computer is 7 years old, and you haven't upgraded the motherboard, it doesn't have PCI- Express, all high end graphics cards operate on PCI express, this limits you to probably a low 7 series or 8 series nvidia card. (im not sure about ATI) 504 mb of ram, is low, too low to game with really, and its probably why GM_flatgrass crashes. It really depends on your motherboard and how many RAM slots it has to be able to determine the amount of RAM you could get into it, but again, being 7 years old, it would be DDR RAM, and thats somewhat hard to find because its so old, unless you use newegg or something. And lastly, your power supply. Dell put the minimum power supply they could in that computer, because it would be cheaper, it could probably handle a low end graphics card, but dont expect to upgrade the motherboard and stick a 9800 or new processor (which you would also need a new motherboard for, unless you found a processor that was the same slot, but unless its lga775 the processor probably wont be good) in there and have it work. That's my two cents, in my honest opinion you need to buy a new computer if you want to game on it, because upgrading your computer to a point where you would get a decent frame rate would probably cost more than a new one. Good luck.
wall of very helpful text
thanks not sure what must of it means but i'll figure it out, but my pc has had a new grapichs card put in a old Nvida card or something.. but they guy told me that was as good as it will ever get.. not a good thing to hear when the games you want to play is stuff like fallout 3
If I were you, I would: A. Get a new computer. B. Go to http://www.crucial.com/ and download the scanner, to find out what kind of Ram you need, and either buy it directly from them, or get it on newegg. I'd get 2GB. You'll definitely see the biggest difference from that. I have have a pc worse than that, with xp, and it is lighting fast. I can't game, but for what I use it for it's great. Use ccleaner, and defragment, and right click my computer, click properties, and the advanced tab, and click performance, than uncheck everything but, use visual styles, unless you want it to look like windows classic.

I'm not too good at building cheap ones that are good but there are some guys on here that are.
get a new computer
Op just build a new computer.
Op just build a new computer.
.
And don't forget to sell that one for an enormous price on eBay, using expert marketing skills. "Brand new computer!*" in 2001.
he can sell it for a bit if he uses craigslist and words his advert right
Ill put a list together from www.ebuyer.com. Getting a decent PC for £300 is easy, I built a 200£ that could max WoW/HL2. Ill psot the list here once its done.
A celeron isn't the greatest processor for gaming, I'd upgrade that too, if you have the money.
That's not bad actually, pretty nice.
but can it run oblivion? that is all i want the pc to run.. 1 pc deicated to running oblivion
but can it run oblivion? that is all i want the pc to run.. 1 pc deicated to running oblivion
Yes. Easily Minimum specs for Oblivion are 2Ghz cpu,128mb Graphics card and 512mb Ram The recommended specs are only a 3ghz cpu 1gb of Ram and a Nvidia 6800 (Shit) [editline]02:28PM[/editline] You have to know what your doing to build a computer though really, read up on it and look at some guides on the internet. And make sure you put in the fucking stand off's when you put in the mobo as i found out the first time. Its not very hard mind, anyone can do it.
i think maybe a friend can build me one so that is not a much of a problem but looking on that site i see a lot of desktops that look just as good, for less, so now that has got me thinking stuff like this.. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167441 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179092 just makes me unsure

You won't run a game on that. Get that ebuyer setup its a good deal.
That doesn't have a graphics card. You won't run a game on that.
ah.. ok..
Get that ebuyer setup its a good deal.
yeah.. i think i will, thanks guys as soon as my money comes though, i'll buy it again many thanks
but can it run oblivion? that is all i want the pc to run.. 1 pc deicated to running oblivion
Yes that PC will run Oblivion very well :buddy: Im pretty sure that rig could play crysis (not at maxxed settings, but at med/high) for £300 your not gonna find a good prebuilt/laptop that can game well so building the PC will be the best choice.
could that run oblivion? that's all i want this pc to run...
assuming you already have an OS, yes
assuming you already have an OS, yes
he can reuse the windows XP he has from his current PC
