I built a PC in 8th grade using "graduation" money and birthday money I had spent up. I upgraded it over the years and it's a decent build.
Single core 3.0 processor, 2 gig RAM, nVidia 8800GT.
This plays games and it plays games well (L4D2 on all high, Dragon Age Origins on high, DR2, what have you.) I basically bought it for Oblivion, which it also plays pretty well.
My birthday's coming up again and I'm thinking about re-upgrading.
I'm not sure what my motherboard is, but I'm assuming I should replace it if I want to stay in the running nowadays.
Now I have no idea what is compatible with what so that's where I'm concerned. Should I keep my build and just upgrade RAM/GPU or go all out and replace mobo/processor as well?
And if so, how do I know if my dvd drives/hdd/PSU will be compatible? I've never replaced a mobo so I don't know how that works.
I also don't know what's good in terms of hardware anymore so I'm looking for help there too.
I'm not sure about a budget but let's try to keep it cheap. $300-$500 preferable. In that range please, if possible.
You'll be able to save the HDD/optical drive but otherwise I think your looking a t a complete re-builld
Alright, that's doable. I'm not sure what to do with graphics though. Or anything, really. Can someone help me with specs?
I need a mobo (I have no idea how to pick one and make sure everything's compatible.), CPU, RAM, and GPU.
I don't know what's a good processor, but I'm looking at video cards and I saw:
AMD Radeon HD 6850 or Geforce GTS 450. Are these good?
6850 is considerably better than a 450, but again, the 6850 is considerably more expensive
if you're planning on going for a 450 though, get a 5770 instead; it's cheaper while performing a bit better

Assuming that you're in the US, here's something you can work off of.

Personally I would keep the 8800GT and get a better build. Then just upgrade to a GTX 460 or higher later.
Thank you Jaehead!
That's not a bad idea...
I just need help choosing a motherboard and power supply. I don't know ANYTHING about motherboards. I want mine to last a long time. I want to be able to add things to it later. I want everything to fit and be compatible, but I don't know what's a good motherboard.
And I'm not sure how much power is good either..

I don't know what's a good processor anymore either.
Pick a processor/motherboard combo from here

Also right now there also seems to be a lot of Case/PSU deals with the 912/922

I would say a decent 650W should be fine for future upgrades and such
Okay, cool! Thank you so much.

So let's say I get this. I'm assuming this processor would work with this mobo. How do I know what video cards will work with this? Or do they all work with all mobos? I'm not sure how this works...

I'm torn between these two:

A 6850 is cheaper and better.
[editline]18th January 2011[/editline]
Well, they seem to perform similarly, but I think the 6850 is more powerful, but has a bit worse drivers ATM.
