I had a thought, but I am in no way a biologist or a chemist. Please forgive me for any ignorance/stupidity.
I do know that once something is brought into existence, it cannot be destroyed; it only changes form. While we do not know what consciousness is, we do know that it exists. And so, assuming that consciousness is a tangible element of our physical being, and that it exists, wouldn't that mean that even in death, it will continue to exist? even if in an altered state?
I know that when our bodies die, our organs cease to function and interact with one another. So, seeing as how there's a possibility that consciousness is tangible, it would probably cease to function along with the brain, in the same fashion as serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine. But what if these chemicals act independently of the brain, and that the brain is just the metaphorical CPU that translates this chemistry into feelings and emotions.
I can't stress enough that I really have no idea what I'm talking about.
When you die the consciousness leaves the body and goes up to Heaven where it becomes an angel.
I hope this helps.
I can see that you really have no idea what you are talking about. This is going to turn into a soul argument I swear but let me put this simply: Consciousness is not a tangible element.
Consciousness is merely the sum of electrical impulses in the brain fired from neurons. Once you die this process stops as the release of energy stops as the neurons in your brain stop firing as the chemical imbalances in your brain have stopped. This energy which is potential at this point will not fire as part of said organism and that means your consciousness is gone. Your consciousness will no longer function as a consciousness, however the potential energy held in the molecules which fire off your neurons will still be present and will be recycled in the grand circle of life and non-life as you decay into a juicy pile of nasty drippings and are absorbed into the earth, possibly to be absorbed into plants, fungi, or bacteria. That is, unless you lock yourself in a metal box after you die, then your potential energy goes nowhere.
Also Santa isn't real, the Easter bunny in your closet is a child molester, and the tooth-fairy is your mother.
Scientists are not the sort of people you want to talk about for feel god soul crap.

Please stop impeding people's understanding of the natural world for a feel good story which has literally no basis in anything other than a fear of death and by extension the unknown.
1) I think Nautsabes was being sarcastic
2) Thanks for clearing that up doomkiwi. And trust me, I'm not looking for a feel-good explanation. If I was I wouldn't have asked this question.

I figured that, but Poe's Law. I'm just kinda grumpy tonight because I have no gas money and I can't see my girlfriend on Christmas.

chill out Mr articulate, it was a joke :)
Sounds like it's time to fire off some neurons if you know what I mean...

The monster under your bed was your uncle in nothing but a jockstrap.
Horrible truth man awaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
Cool thread, doomkiwi sure showed you all.
Would read again.
As correct as doomkiwi is, I've heard some interesting stories of people having out of body experiences after being legally dead.(brain, heart, lungs completely off). After being revived, these patients usually recalled exact details of the time when they were "dead" as if they were watching through another set of eyes. This would imply that you are somehow conscious after everything has been shutoff. It very well may be a huge dump of the drug DMT (which may also be responsible for dreams). Though i've heard some interesting hypothesis that state our conscious is on a quantum level.

It's some pretty interesting shit, whether or not it's true, it needs some further research. It's generally quickly shunned because it practically opens the window to "souls" being possible. I'm neither a neurologist nor a quantum physicists(nor a believer in ghosts or souls, but I'll have to say this makes me wonder) so I'm going to shutup before I make myself look bad. Just throwing this out there for discussion. Doomkiwi's explanation is correct to the full extent of our understanding of consciousness.

Could be just the memory decaying slightly and altering memory banks in the brain so he remembers tripping balls there?
