As the title says, I'm going to be building a new system as my current one is outdated. (Pentium 4, 1 Gig of ram, old AGP card) Everything has to go as I can't bring any parts, the PSU is only 400w so I don't have any use for it and the case is incredibly small and wouldn't fit new larger components. I'm mainly going to use this for Starcraft 2 and I'd like that to run smooth on higher settings in large battles as well as Source and HoN. I have Speakers/Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard.
Where do you live
do you need an OS
And a DVD drive and Harddrive.
[editline]2nd February 2011[/editline]
US and I have Windows 7 and a 64 bit version if need be.
how big is your HDD? because I can easily fit in both a DVD drive and a new HDD into the budget
I say this because I'm assuming that they're both IDE, and judging by your specs I'm also assuming that your HDD is small
Yeah they're both IDE. One of them is a newer Seagate model 149 gigs and the other is a Western Digital 37 gigs.
Here, it's $600, or $560 w/ rebates

woah my screenshot is messed up
I can upload a new one if you can't see it
Yeah a larger version would be nice I can't see much.
[editline]2nd February 2011[/editline]
Don't need the DVD Drive, and I think I'll be fine without the HDD. Is there anything else I can get for more bang?
This is the picture

if you choose not to get a HDD or a DVD drive, then I suggest you get a 955 and a new motherboard, or this
[url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.592322[/url]
(I really recommend that you get yourself a new HDD/DVD drive though, IDE cables are real messy, and the HDD is probably slow)
I don't think I need a quad core and coolermaster PSU's suck and the Radeon only has a 256 bit memory interface( so no bandwith)
With your budget I don't see why you would go dual-core
Coolermaster PSUs don't suck, it's true that some aren't as good as others, but the specific one that I have in my build is very nice for the price
[quote]Radeon only has a 256 bit memory interface( so no bandwith)[/quote]
what are you even trying to say here
[editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
I mean, I understand that if you want to spend less money you can definitely go dual-core, but if you're planning on dropping $600 on a rig then quad core is the way to go
600$ is not alot of money to drop and it can be spent on a Dual core, which are more then enough for current games. The extra money could be spent on more RAM or a GPU.
[editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
I'm not doing multi-app 'nor do I need the raw computing power
[editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
I do appreciate your help tho'
Well if you go for a dual-core processor then you get yourself a better GPU, then you're just creating a bottleneck.
The quad core is there not because I think you use this computer for multitasking or rendering, but simply for balance.
Also, if you're gaming you really don't need any more than 4GB of RAM
Take the current build including HDD. Having a slow HDD is a killer to framerate in some games and as said above a dual-core will bottleneck the gpu.

Just 40$ more, I measured my case and came to the conclusion it is the right size.
I can't see it
post a screencap or something
[img]http://filesmelt.com/dl/2e3423.png[/img]
why would you go 775
there's really no reason at all
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
you're basically overpaying for everything, except for the RAM and the PSU to be honest
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
If you get that build I [i]guarantee[/i] that you'll regret it
The newer socket chips cost more.
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
Plus the new mobos don't take IDE

Why would you ask for someone to plan a build for you and change so much against everyone's advice like that?
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
[QUOTE=FlameCow;27860133]OP, what are you doing? People are giving you good sensible builds and you deny them all, saying shit along the lines of "they're too good".[/QUOTE]
Basically this, yeah.
Sorry if I seem to be going against you, I just want to hear opinions on builds and compare them with one another, your build is more focused on CPU intensive applications which I will not be doing (mostly gaming)
"Also the E8400 will do a better overclock than the AMD 635, which again is also good for gaming. MOST games will not require all 4 cores to be active, but rather perform better on 2 cores running at higher frequencies.
I would go for a mix of the 2 builds, take everything from the first build except for the CPU/MOBO. I have the 630 Athlon quad core, and it barely performs better than my e2160 dual core... stock is 1.8ghz on the e2160 but i OC'ed it to 3.33ghz. The athlon 630 is at stock at 2.8ghz and i don't see it as that much faster... Though i don't do any cpu intensive tasks."
On second thought, i would go for a core i5 instead. the E8400 is way too old, and the motherboard will prevent you from future upgrades. Get a new core i5 the second generation with the new 1155 board, and you will probably be upgrade proof for a year or two."
I'd just like to hear your 2 cents on what you think of that.
you won't be able to get sandy bridge with this budget, you're looking at an athlon 640
I'd like to know where you got that from because dual>quad might have been true 2 years ago but now with any decent game supporting 4 cores quad is the way to go
" [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...870A-UD3%20AM3[/url]
sub $100 and you get sata 6gb/s and usb 3.0
CPU i would get the x6 1090T, for AMD its so cheap to get the six core as compared to intel... the 1090T is only $200 compare to the i7-970 at $900.... of course the 970 out performs the 1090T but not to the price ratio...
So i would recommend getting the 1090T and the mobo i suggested, it will be $100 more than your initial build. However, if you are planning to keep this for 2 years or more, it will more than pay for itself."
100$ is no concern to me as my brother is willing to pay for the CPU. I think I'll end up going the AMD course.
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
Also on your dual core comment.
"there is a reason why the dual core i5-650 is only $20 less than the quad core i5-750. There is not that much difference in performance. You may get a bit of boost in the quad for apps with a lot of threads, but higher clock on the dual core "almost" makes up for it. That is why the price is set where they are."
that link is broken
only get the AMD 6 cores if you're going to be primarily rendering or something similar, the 955 is better for games
and the dual core i5s are expensive because they have an integrated graphics processor, the 760 is way better
where are you getting this stuff from because most of it is bullshit

[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
just get jaehead's build, he knows his shit and definitely knows better than whatever/whoever you're quoting
I'll just hold up and and get the i5 2500 once Sandy Bridge is released.
sandy bridge IS released, and the CPU/Mobo/RAM alone will take up more than half your budget
ughh there's nothing more annoying than a thread asking for advice made by an OP who doesn't want to hear any advice
I'll go with my recent build for a friend as reference was £590ish bare in mind the model numbers and names might not be exact, going from memory. (this is for playing recently released games, had no complaints from him about it)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Motherboard: Asus M4A89T-V EVO/USB3 (6 SATA connections plus an IDE input to reuse those old drives)
Ram: G.Skill Ripjaw 2x2gb (Any 4gb kit at around $60 would do the job)
GPU: MSI GTX 460 1GB cyclone
PSU: Corsair 650w
HDD: Samsung spinpoint F3 500gb
Now you would be an absolute fool not to go with a quad core, you can see from the benchmark posted above the sheer difference in gaming performance as well as all round performance. Another pointer is that AMD is usually the cheaper option that gives more for the money but Intel are truly better if you can afford the extra.
4GB is more than enough for gaming, I run 4 in my main desktop which I use for everything (games, media, sql, server VM's) and the only drawback on having 4gb is for the virtual machines. If I'm playing a game I'll usually only have a couple of things open and I rarely use more than 2gb at any given time.
I don't understand why you think a 256bit interface is slow, that GPU was only released a couple of months back however it is an entry level card from ATI.
There is absolutely no point going for the GTX470 right now in time, best option is to save some pennies and get the GTX570 or 560 ti. Even a GTX460 1gb would run Starcraft absolutely fine.
Hope I've been of some use clearing up some of the different points that have been thrown about.

I know what you mean, it's like banging your head against a brick wall.
Are you fucking mad? LGA 775?
Why would you need to take IDE drives anyway?
There is no reason for a GTX 470. The GTX 560 Twin Frozr II performs a shitload better while being cheaper by $20.
Also, clock DOES NOT make up for number of cores.
Example:
An Intel P8700 (dual-core mobile @ 2.8GHz) DOES NOT beat my new laptop's i7 which is clocked at "only" 1.6GHz. In fact, my new laptop's i7 obliterates the old CPU.
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
My advice is to go with Jaehead's build. That is one of the best sub-600 builds I've ever seen, and you have to be a psycho to not get it.
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
And stop talking about GPUs like you know how they work. 256-bit doesn't matter. A GPU can have killer specs and perform like shit.
Have you even seen benchmarks on the 6850's performance? It's better than a GTX 460 in a lot of cases. You cannot really infer the performance of a GPU by looking solely at it's specs.
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
And you are horrendously overpaying for the CPU. Get the Phenom II x4. You are going to be playing starcraft. It is intensive on the CPU.
My god, when you don't know what the hell you are saying, just listen to other people, who know much more than you.
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
In fact, just save a little bit more and get an H67 mobo with an i5-2400.

OP, you should really go with this build. It is [b]AWESOME[/b] for it's price and you're throwing away a very good deal. Please stop saying incredibly stupid things and buy this fucking computer.

[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
Really, you have 0 clue about anything, so go with Jaehead's build. Every one of his I've seen are really good.
