So it's a community patch but it gets released officially for every HL2 version?
I honestly didn't notice anything wrong with the game's lighting and shadow and particle effects until after I watched the video. It's nice to see HL2 get a facelift eleven years after its launch.
They fixed the Source shadow problem... Somebody get this stuff into TF2 and CS:S!
It's a standalone mod for HL2, not associated with Valve at all, except for the fact that the mod is up on Steam.
Thanks for the info!
You can barely tell the difference. If you hadn't seen a direct comparison between that and stock Half-Life 2, you'd be struggling to tell what the differences are. A few lighting differences, going wild with fog and bloom and a new fire particle are barely impressive, at least not worth this self-fellating, pretentious PDF (with 3 pages of ads) that was put up on the store page.

And the bloom examples still make my eyes bleed, I never could stand the bloom in Source games.
is there a mod / anything that I can use to get the very old style of bunny hopping by prop surfing with use+jump and bunny hop?
outside of the 2004 files I guess? I think I threw away the original 234 discs that came with hl2

bloom is shit period in games unless used very subtly and smartly
motion blur is even worse though

This just seems like something valve should have done themselves.
BMS team ought to have a crack at re-doing the models/textures/lighting altogether. Would be a more worthwhile venture and actually make the game look "updated" to modern standards.

I miss the pagedown/pageup weapons switch hack that makes rapid firing with the gravity gun possible.
That and the ability in HL2DM to put things over S.L.A.M's before they activated.
Made for nice boobytraps
Ravenholm and interiors in general look a lot better, it might just be time to revisit HL2.

There's nothing wrong with HL2's original lighting, the update just makes it better and adds detail. I'm guessing it'll take a performance hit that the devs couldn't afford back in the 2004 launch, for example the guy just fucking removed LODs

Aw the commentary's done by a bunch of youtubers, like that won't be distracting. What's up with the shit ton of ads?
Minimal changes that really make it hard pressed to notice the difference in a lot of the comparisons.
However, it's a step in the right direction and an update like this for a game that is over a decade old is welcomed with open arms.
That fucking wave splashing at 1:29 holy shit

Also, how does this work with certain details disappearing after a certain view distance?
Clickbait title - it's a mod that "fixes" and "enhances" certain things not a patch/update
I'll bet Breen is still sitting in an invisible chair
Hopefully if valve ever releases Source 2, i'm justing going to do a full overhaul on the Half life 2 maps.
No I'm not going to go full Cinematic mod on it, i just me add more npcs, add some more objects, and maybe just a few more props on the coast maps, though i rather keep it close to the barren aspect of it.
Well it doesn't turn Alyx into a prostitute so there's that.
Its a good thing that Half life 2 is getting a community update, but one thing that i hate about half life 2 is how the original story line sounded way more interesting than the retail version.
I mean the retail story was great, the Original was way more gritty and desolate compared to the one we got. Yes i know that half life 2 is pretty gritty and has dystopia themes, but jesus, the original storyline was if you amped up Half life 2 to almost full grim dark.
The Air Exchange and original city designs were way more better looking

The thing is I think the original concept was....not Half-Life enough.
I know it sounds dumb but I don't think it fits the theme and all to have a Half-Life so grimdark it competes with Warhammer 40K.
Some elements like the air exchange and water pumping sounded cool and all but I'm glad they actually didn't go for it completely.
It's just me though

Well yes but, the Combine in the story were a race of Super powerful inter dimensional beings. And had the power to overwhelm the military in seven hours. I think the original storyline shows you the true power that the combine actually had over Earth. Also the idea of destroying a massive Structure that is destroying your world's atmosphere and causing an uprising is more epic than an accidental explosion caused by a portal in a futuristic military prison.
The beta storyline was indeed much darker and had you running through a whole lot of places. Kind of reminds me of the original Half-Life. I mean, the original was pretty dark aswell. It felt like a horror game every now and then, watching people fall to their deaths or getting gibbed into pieces while screaming their lungs out. and that's just a bit of it. Then you had soldiers who were trying to contain it, aka kill everyone in it, and enslaved monster aliens trying to kill you.
The beta also had a shitload of enemies, cool weapons and gadgets, and I think at one point, it even looked slightly better than retail, judging from the beta files I saw once.
But its defining point for me is that it had a whole lot more variety, and it was much darker. You even had kids working in factories building cremators.
at this point I'd be fine with these guy's finishing half life 3.
Tbh wouldn't even mind a hl2 reboot with that artstyle.
Maybe they could introduce that art style in half life 3?
Maybe they could introduce that art style in half life 3?
They could do it, but I'm really doubting they will.
TBH, I'd like to see just a whole new game with that artstyle.
I wonder if valve will someday incorporate this as an update for half-life 2 + episodes one and two

Funny considering HL2 feels different from HL1 in most every way but the raw gameplay
I really want to see what it would be like if Valve or someone wanting to make a game like that went through it with the confidence Warhammer/Dredd/Penumbra/Zeno Clash/Other games has, and fully embraced the style. It seems like whenever someone tries to make something grimdark / horror based they limit themselves and it really ruins the entire theme.
I'd love to see a game with a grim-dark dystopian 70's/80's film / beta hl2 feel to it. But it won't be that good unless the devs aren't afraid of publishing exactly what they in-vision.
also, I think one reason the original ideas could have been dropped was...
[t]http://media.curse.com/content/images/2011/september/skyrim/concept-art/1.jpg[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/3kvOIrC.jpg[/t]
the effect concept art has. Skyrim has some of the coolest concept art I've seen, but the game looks very much different from it. Exactly the same goes for hl2. Concept art and imagination is limitless, but in a video game it will look WAY different than the artist imagined. If it looks like shit in the game you have to change it up and roll would another set of paintings, or you might even need to have an entirely different STYLE all together.
I honestly prefer the fakefactory version of maps over this update.
I honestly prefer the fakefactory version of maps over this update.
Just the maps? Then I kinda get it.
This looks like it doesn't really change the maps, just lighting and whatnot.
Using "patch" made it sound like Valve was going to release it as an update to HL2.
Differences are pretty minor, to be totally honest. As was mentioned previously, I'd be struggling to notice the changes if not for the side by side comparisons. I'll stick with the original, but it's nice to see people other than cinematic-mod guy taking an interest in updating the visuals.
