Back story: I had a computer that I received in 2004, put in a 9600GT in December 08, computer crapped out in January. Got new computer in February, video card is now a 9800GT but the fan is a bucket o' balls and cant play games with out a fuck up or heat up.
Current Situation: After learning of my cards massive amount of fail I went out on a quest to find a new one, I found my answer in the 9800GTX+ and the GTX260 (I am more Nvidia as their drivers have had a better track record). While I was venturing fourth in my glee I realized one thing, I had a PCI-E x16 and not the PCI-E 2.0 x16 that was needed for the card. I asked around and was told that it would work because issues are rare between the two. I now come you to asking this same question. Will either of the two cards listed below work in my computer?
9800GTX- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130456
GTX 260- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130434
My computer too is listed here as it is a prebuilt; http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-mini/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-studio-mini&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp
also, this is basically what I have in my computer right now, minus the brand recognition; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130435
Also, which do you recommend, the GTX260 or 9800GTX+?
GTx260 definitely.

Get that instead.
4870 1GB for sure.

What's your power supply, by the way?
4870 1GB for sure.

What's your power supply, by the way?
I have an extra 500W from my last computer
500W power supply can handle pretty much any current single-GPU card.
Go for the 4870 1GB posted above.
Spread the 4870  around. Awesome card.
260 outperforms 4870. Not that 4870 isn't a good card, they are both fantastic.

Son, don't make me disappoint.
GTX 260 (192 core) < 4870 512MB < GTX 260 (216 core) < 4870 1GB
Yeah maybe Giant Sea should specify the 260 he's talking about before claiming something.
Son, don't make me disappoint.

Where would two 9800GT's in SLI fair on this chart?
They'd normally outperform the 4870 1GB.

Sorry, that's what I meant, I thought we were talking about the 216 core.

In both reviews, 260 is favored. I guess I just like the card more, but as I said, both are great cards.
Do you know how many of those games are "The Way It's Meant To Be Played"?
Yeah.
I'd go for the 4870 1GB.
Is there honestly a substantial difference between the two? Enough to rate me dumb because you disagree with me, even when there's a disagree button?
It's my opinion, just like you have yours. Also, those "The way it's meant to be played" games are great, popular games, so does that make nVidia a bad guy? Not at all, I don't even know why you're arguing with me. Both cards are pretty much the standard in gaming, are we not allowed to agree on that? The cards preform well on certain games, some do better on a certain game than the other.
[editline]03:13AM[/editline]
I don't feel like arguing more, all I would say is get the cheaper of the two wherever you can find it, you really can't go wrong.
I didn't rate you dumb.
I'm not arguing with you; I'm just saying that I'd get the 4870 1GB over the 216.
That's fine with me, hope you don't mind if I plug the 260 GTX 216 core in my favor, as my friends own the card and all say it runs very well.
[editline]03:17AM[/editline]
That wasn't aimed at insulting the ATI card, but just stating that the 260 wouldn't be a regrettable choice, should the OP choose it.
Between the 216 and the 4870 1GB, the real difference is price.
The performance is just that close.
You really can't go wrong, they're both such good cards
[editline]03:28AM[/editline]
TBH, 4870 probably wins in the price department
4870 fanboys are rating me dumb
they sure showed me
yep
The only reason Nvidia's cards do better is because games are optimized especially for their cards.

What brand is it?
Do not say rocketfish

that's a bad thing?
ATIs too cool for bribing developers.

I don't like the looks of that but if you don't use it at full load for like 2 days straight, then you'll be fine i guess.
OCZ/Corsair/Antec/Coolermaster/Others are good brands, I can't think of them all.
I would still like to know if the PCI-E x16 slot will work with every PCI-E 2.0 x16 card.

Yes.
