I'm getting a new phone on contract as my original generation iphone has finally run it's time, I haven't decided on a phone or network or a place to buy it yet (although I have been looking at carphone warehouse) and I really need some advice as I know very little about new/existing/upcoming phones.
If anyone has any advice on what network I should try to get it from, what phone I should be looking to get and the best place to get it from in the UK I would really appreciate it, any personal experiences would also help a tonne!
I'm looking for a phone that has a multitude of features, a smartphone, I enjoyed my iphone but obviously I'm very limited to what apps I can now use with the hardware being so out of date compared to the 3GS/iPhone 4. I was looking at the iPhone 4 and while it still remains an option I wanted to try out a new OS, something like Android or the new windows phone I've been hearing about, again I have no experience with anything other than 1.3.6 iPhone os (Forgot the specific name, iOS?) and therefore am very limited in my decision.
Any help is again appreciated, thankyou!

Forgot to add a bit of preference, I want something that will do everything my original generation iphone can do now, and more. As I said I didn't get to experience some of the better games like the new Unreal engine and the new games being released for it so Android will be a big plus for me, I don't want to get an obscure phone only to have nothing to do and no community to talk with about it, the iphone appstore and (from what I've heard) the Android appstore are both teaming with content. Oh, and battery life is a big thing too, I don't mind charging it every night but I'll be using it extensively at college.
To be honest android is very good from what I've seen but doesn't have as many apps as the iPhone.
The thing is though most of the apps in the iStore are games and the ones that are actually useful usually have a version on android.
So I would maybe go android if you want to try out a new OS but don't disregard the iPhone just because you are bored with it, it is a very good device.
I think you can get the iPhone 3GS for around £100 - £200 at some shops now if you buy it with a contract.
After reading your edit I think you should go for the iPhone if you want to play good games on your phone.
O2 is very good, they have strong coverage across the UK and have reasonable prices too.

As for the phone I'd say the iPhone 3GS/4 or the Samsung Galaxy S.

Did you read the OP?
I think not.
To be honest, I like the idea of playing games on my iphone but whenever I actually try and say to myself "ok, I'm going to finish the new prince of persia on my phone, here we go" 5 minutes later I get bored and never played it again, although some of that was due to it being laggy as balls on my original generation.
One of my friends "Mgear" actually has a Galaxy S and he enjoys it as far as I know, although I'm not a fan of the curvy design and the HTC Desire HD looks a lot prettier in my eyes.

I think so.

I good god you answered the smallest question in the OP.
I missed it.
Anyway, I'd say that iOS (that is the name) is better than Android. My friend got the Galaxy S and we compared (I have the iPhone 4). While android is good, iOS is much more optimised and easier to use.
Will you be selling your current iPhone for money towards it?
If you are going to, then I suggest you don't. iPhone seems to be the only brand wanting money upfront as well as a monthly payment. However, other phones don't. You're almost better going and buying a android/windows device and paying monthly, and keeping your iPhone too. Best of both worlds I guess.

It's the first generation anyway so it's not exactly a hot seller. I was planning on giving it to my sister's boyfriend for Christmas if I get my contract phone, or a late present. It's jailbroken/unlocked at 1.3.6 (although I'll update to the latest if I give it to him) and there is only slight cosmetic damage to it even though I've had it three years, his current phone is terrible and he'll be using pay as you go whether I give him the iPhone or not.
I am currently looking at the HTC Desire HD as I like the look of it and it's Android, I also get a free PSP GO or 10.1" netbook for absolutely nothing apparently from carphone warehouse, which is nice. If anyone has any thoughts on it please let me know!
Also, I forgot to mention that I hate buying new products only for an even better one to come out a week later, I understand that flagship hardware or just hardware in general aren't brand new for long, I bought my 6870 graphics card only for it to become out of date a week later. But I don't want to rush my phone now only for a new line of fantastic phones to be already announced and soon to be released.
Well saying that I know that if you get a iPhone 4 now it will be quite a while before apple releases a new one so you won't have to worry about it becoming outdated any time soon.
I was having a little look at the iphone 4 on carphone warehouse and it says "Phone £219, £25 a month" so I'm guessing you have to pay £219 for the phone, then start the monthly cost. If so I can't do that I'm afraid, I was hoping the iphone contracts would be like the others, free phone and then a monthly cost.

I believe that the droid has WAY more apps than the Iphone, or at least in the US there is. This is due to the open source usability of the droid platform, even as we speak my roommate is making his own app for his droid.
Does anyone know where to buy in the UK? All I'm looking at so far is carphone warehouse, can't think of anywhere else.

Does it? I don't have much experience with Android apps so I am probably mistaken.

That or phones4you.
Just looked at phones4u, anywhere else?

Not off the top of my head.
Could try the service providers sites.
I know Orange has their own online shop.

there are nowhere near as many android apps as there are ios apps
So far I've planning on getting the HTC Desire HD, I love the huge screen, Android is a bonus and it comes with great contracts for £25 a month, anyone have any comments on it though?
Just looked at phones4u, anywhere else?
O2 and Orange stores
Double post.
go with three or t-mobile if you don't want to be completely ripped off. don't bother with carphone or phones4u, if you're gonna buy through a crappy reseller buy from mobiles.co.uk (who are actually part of carphone but much cheaper)
also if you want games buy an iphone. angry birds and pocket legends are the only decent games I can find and they're both on the iPhone
Get the DesireHD.
I got my phone from buymobilephones.net on a T-Mobile contract, they have some great deals.
Just don't choose a contract with cashback or redemption since they are a pain in the ass.
Oh and don't buy an android from Motorola since when I got my Milestone XT720 they promised an upgrade to 2.2 but now they have gone 'lololol you will be on 2.1 forever'.
Don't go with phones4u, worst experience of my life trying to get a phone out of them.
Carphonewarehouse do some stunning deals around christmas, id go to them.
Surprisingly, T-mobile is very good at the moment, and actually has the best signal coverage, thanks to the merger with orange. So you get all of oranges coverage (as well as tmobile's), but you dont have to deal with the idiots that run it :)
HTC's new range is pretty good, i've got the standard desire and i love it <3

25 quid a month, and you get the phone for free, you you can spend a bit more and get stuff like a galaxy tab or a tv with it
But bear in mind, you will need an internet plan with it
Get t-mobile or orange, you can use both of their signal if you on either one of them. It's very handy. As for the phone I'd recommend the Nexus S as it's the most up to date and most powerful phone at the moment. Lot's of contracts with it too from carphone warehouse.

Root your phone, go to XDA developers and install a new rom. There you go, 2.2 without the T-Mobile bloatware.
