What are the best smartphones that are not iPhones?

I'm looking to buy a new phone to finally get rid of my old £10 piece of crap I've had for too long and replace it with a nice modern smartphone.
I don't want an iPhone because of the price and the fact I already own an iPad so I don't need a smaller version of what I have + phone, especially not for the prices they go for.
I'm after a nice, fast smartphone that does all the basic things such as 3G mobile internet, Facebook, the standard stuff.
I'm looking into android phone because they seem really customizable which is something I'd really want in my phone but depending on what I gather from you guys I'm willing to look at other areas.
Things I'm looking for:
Capacitive touch screen - I do NOT want a phone with a stupid stylus, they just make using the phone properly slower.
Customizability - Always nice, I've heard androids are good for this.
Speed - Always a plus
Responsiveness - An iOS device response damn brilliantly when you touch it, this is a plus.
These are not strict things I'm looking for, would just be nice to see a phone with all these factors.
So guys. What do you suggest :)?
Oh, I'm also on a budget of around £100-£150
(Needs to be available in the UK)
I heard the Galaxy S or S II are neat (the Ace being only a smaller version.)
Most Android phones which arent too cheap, I have a HTC Desire and have owned an iPod Touch, I personally think that the Desire would be better than an iPhone, but the Android market is the second best mobile app store, the first one being the Apples app store.
The HTC EVO 4G is super amazing. I have an iPhone 4 and I am saying that. God I want it!
I got the Droid 3 about a week ago from the buy 1 get 1 free deal. It's pretty damn awesome!
What would you guys say about the HTC Sensation? Orange have a nice plan with that phone than I can afford.
Galaxy II is imho the only phone which has same/better responsiveness as iOS devices, definitely best android phone on the market
