I heard the game was pretty bad due to some kind of "experience" update or something. Last I heard the system was being scrapped. How is the state of the game?

Rust being on the list of games that cannot be stockpiled in Steam Inventory may be a factor. As would the recent policy of getting caught by the anti cheat resulting in being flagged so you are insta-banned on starting a new copy.
