Was wondering is it worth spending the extra few bob to get a mouse with higher DPI? What kind of advantage will I benefit from this?
Was looking at the MX518 = £26

Logitech G500 Gaming Mouse USB = £39.70

CM Storm Sentinel Gamers Mouse = £48.63

Anybody used any of these mice?
It doesn't matter. The Storm Sentinel is a piece of shit at that price, you can't go wrong with either the G500 or MX518.
Personally; not really. I have a G500, and with it you can set it to three levels of speed, mine are.
1- 800DPI
2- 1500DPI
3- 5700DPI
But I use level 1 most if not all the time. I enjoy the mouse more because the weight and the scroll wheel.
I have the G500, and I love it. On the fly DPI switching works wonders in TF2.
I have the MX518, 'tis badass. I love it, and at that price it's a bargain.
I don't particularly like the 3D Flip button, but you can always use the configuration menu to change its function.
rocking a sidewinder x5, shit's the shit
too bad it's so light if you don't add any ballast to it.
Higher DPI is only really useful if your monitor's resolution is of 1920x1080 or higher.
If not its just marketing
I run 2560x1600 and high DPI is just as inconvenient as it is on a lower resolution.

why not?
Get the G500, I have one and love it.
MX518 for sure, you can't go wrong with it.

By the way the MX518 link and the G500 link are the same.
Go for the G500
I like the surface of the MX518 better.
Thanks for the comments guy's im going to go with the MX518
Higher dpi is better. If it's too fast for you turn down the sensitivity in windows or your games. Using a low dpi with a high sensitivity makes it really inaccurate.

I fail to see how a more accurate cursor is inconvenient.

I can easily move my cursor 1px at a time with my G7 on the stock medium DPI setting, and that is about the small motion I can move my hand as well. I don't see how a higher DPI would make navigation any easier.
I'm using this mouse:

Works just as well as my cousins 80 dollar razer mouse..
Personally, I don't see the point. I have an MX518 but I always have it set to 400 dpi.
I have a G5, but I keep it at around 800 dpi, it can go up to 2000, but I never use it that high.
I can't imagine 5700 dpi
I'm using a G9, don't know what my DPI is, 6000 something I think. I like it mostly for the weights and feel though.
Got a Sidewinder X8 here, using it on 4000 DPI. I really don't see much point in getting high DPI, though. I was fine with my generic mouse which I assume was probably 750 DPI. The only reason I got a new one is because the right click broke. I find I had to tweak the sensitivity as well to get it to feel right, it takes ages to get used to.
Higher DPI gives you a very small difference in precision but has the adverse effect of negative acceleration which is detrimental to consistency. The little bit of precision you'll gain from a higher DPI is completely useless when there is a total lack of consistency.
The best idea is to use 400 or 800 DPI, default windows sens, and then adjust in game. Get a large mousepad and make use of it...a lot of people move it with their arms and once I got an mx518/qck+ I quickly (no pun intended :X) converted to using my arm instead of wrist for mouse movements.
Sensitivity at the end of the day is personal preference but if you have a DPI higher than 800 you're going to have acceleration problems which will lead to inconsistency and it will drive you crazy.
I got a Sidewinder X9, and I crank it all the way up (Which is 2000DPI), now, I really want it to go higher. After I bought it, I have played much better, at first it was a little hard on 2000DPI, but it grew on me, and now I can't play with anything less.
I have a g9x and I play 300 dpi, really you don't need a mouse with more than 1000 dpi.
It's a preference. I would like one with maybe, 2500-3000DPI, but I don't think I would like more.
I have source sens at around 1.9
Broke my automerge.
I prefer higher DPI mice personally, just feels better.

that's the x8 idk about x9
In my honest opinion, I think that high dpi is good only if you can adjust it, for example having a setting for games, one for Ps, and one for Internet.
but this Precision mode button on the Rat 5-9 mouse is really cool and useful.

To get back to the original question, there's a balance.
If your DPI is too high and your game FPS too low, your mouse (unless you're playing something built on the Q3 engine not including source games) will run into the edge of your screen and won't be able to move any farther in that frame. It's called negative acceleration, and basically limits how fast you can turn your character ingame. Then again if you get a mouse with too low of a DPI for your mouse speed, you'll run into a problem where you'll have to set your in-game sensitivity so high that you lose pixel-perfect accuracy.
I HIGHLY recommend you read this thread, and then decide based on your resolution, framerate, and preferred mouse sensitivity what DPI mouse you should get.

And if you're too lazy, just get a mouse with a high DPI that you can change down if needed without the drivers.
