Hi, I have the i5-3570k @ 3.2 Ghz (3.6 Ghz turbo) and I was wondering, will it hurt the cpu if I clock it to the turbo speed? I plan on buying an aftermarket cooler for it as well. Any advice is appreciated!
If it's unstable, your computer will just crash and there's no damage, if it runs too hot it'll throttle or shut down before causing any damage. Upping the voltage too much will however cause damage.
Bro you can pull off 4GHz very easily with decent cooling
All CPUs start degrading when they're powered on. Overclocking a CPU accelerates the degradation, depending on how much you overclock. Extreme overclocks or raising the voltage of the CPU will accelerate the degradation and can severely reduce the CPUs lifespan. Modern CPUs are predicted to have a lifespan of about 10 years, so a moderate overclock will probably subtract 2-3 years of its lifespan.
As long as you have decent aftermarket cooling you should be able to pull off a decent overclock without sacrificing much of the lifespan of your processor.
A Cooler master H212+ will easily get you to 4GHz+ if you have decent airflow in your case.
Like Starship said, with something like the Hyper 212 EVO, you'd be able to achieve about 4.2Ghz with ease as long as the rest of the airflow is being directed correctly.
Corsair H100 let me push 5.0 stable on my i7. However it does require two dual 120mm fans, the lower models such as the H80 or H60 are single 120mm mounts. I highly suggest looking into liquid cooling if your serious about overclocking. I made it a project for one of my classes during high school and they gave me an A, doubt any of them understood what I actually did, but an A none the less.
