Hello,
My brother wants to build a basic gaming computer. He wants to be able to play source games like CS:S and TF2 maxed out. He also wants to be able to play Starcraft 2 maxed out. His budget is around $500 if possible. This does not include monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers or OS. If someone could help me get a parts list together that would be great. Thanks.
US/CA?
Current monitor res?
Can you reuse some stuff?
Do you already have Windows?
Canada, I'll probably order from newegg.ca
Unknown, no monitor ATM
We have no parts ATM
Nope, will be buying W7 but don't include in list
Do you know the size of the monitor you will get? Like will he prefer a rather large screen or not? Also make sure you get Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

$526 Canadian before rebates/shipping/taxes. If you want to shave a few bucks off, you can sacrifice the tricore for a nice little AthlonII dualcore.
It will probably be around 24 inches for the monitor. The res will probably be 1920 x 1080.

4850 might struggle with that.
ncix is better than newegg canada

Are the prices better? If so, OP can probably keep the same specs plus get a better GPU.

Any other cards you can recommend?

I game at a relatively low resolution, 1366x768. So I really do not know what is the best card for your resolution at your budget. I would say to try and get a 4870, 4890, 5830, or a GTX460.

No it wouldn't. I'm running a 24 inch with CSS at 2048x1152 with maxed out settings with a 5770, I think it could handle the basics.

Post the parts and prices you pick on Ncix just in case, too.
