I'm sorry, and what does this matter to the government?
That we aren't being hard working labour monkeys oooooooooooo look that person isn't contributing to society WE MUST HUNT THEM DOWN AND DRAG THEM TO GULAG.
fuck this and fuck the researchers, morons so out of touch with reality.
people get addicted to online games because they have nothing good going on in their real life. if you take away what makes online games addictive, those people will just go and get addicted to something else instead.
it's not the game's fault for being addictive, it's the player's for being prone to addictive behaviour.

quite obvious, The government has solved every single other important issue out there
What the fuck. The BBC linked article has a related article from 2006 where they were ranting on about the same thing.
What is Nottingham Trent's angle? What do they gain from trying to get shit placed on gamers?
There's so many lol-worthy things in this article, so I'll just touch on one of them.
University of Derby cyber psychologist Dr Zaheer Hussain said more needed to be done.
Cyber psychologist? This is what happens when you give out degrees to people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about. So detached from anything resembling reality.
People play games and they find them interesting and play them more.
Take away an EVE player's PC away and he's going to be seriously pissed off.
People watch TV and they find it interesting so they watch it more.
Take away an avid Coronation Street fan's TV away and she's going to be pissed off.
People enjoy fishing so they find it interesting and go fishing more.
Take away a fisher's rod and he's going to be pissed off.
People enjoy sex so they have sex.
Take away sex and they're going to be pissed off.
This guy's just targeting games for no apparent reason. Probably because he doesn't like them and thinks they're a bad way to spend your time.
If he wanted to do some real research he should look at the core of addiction in humanity and drop his silly prejudice.
yes let's crack down on MMOs instead of focusing on the core issue with addictive personalities

cyberpsychology is actually a valid field of research
Although this research is pretty bad (and its suggestions ridiculous), I wouldn't mind regulation on some game systems. Plenty of F2P games (notably in mobile space) rely on cheap and randomized risk/reward mechanics, with real money involved. It's a lot like gambling, or the things that make gambling addictive in the first place.
Wait this was University of Derby? I thought this was done by the Chinese, judging by the title.
I feel like those single sitting stats are very skewed.
What is Nottingham Trent's angle? What do they gain from trying to get shit placed on gamers?
Well ermm it is academia, its supposed to discuss and explore things. Even if you don't like the results.

If it makes you feel any better, the University of Derby is actually terrible.
It's nottingham trent dont worry about it.
MMOs already tell you how long you've been playing for straight and recommend taking a break. Not much more you can do than that. Don't play the blame game on the big bad company, that won't fix anything.
If it makes you feel any better, the University of Derby is actually terrible.
My mother went to the University of Derby, you pig.
does anyone else feel MMOs are actually helpful for society?
i found that have been forced to accept grinding or doing dailies, quests and other boring and dull tasks for a reward, much like a real life job.
i actually think MMOs turns people into perfect production line workers
My mother went to the University of Derby, you pig.
My mother, brother, sister and myself all went to the same school which was terrible.
I ain't calling the people who call that school terrible pigs. I call them smart.

QFT. Oh no he/she isn't being enough of an economic slave/worker/employee or "entrepreneur". Quick, shut off the things they enjoy! They shouldn't be allowed to escape our society of mediocrity! Give them a 0 hour contract and then they'll be happy about everything!

I'd be inclined to say it's also the fault of a lack of social equality, mediocrity, and consumerism. A lot of people play and become addicted to games simply because real life does not provide a good deal for them.
quite obvious, The government has solved every single other important issue out there
Oh yeah they solved everything.
On a serious note, it seems they try to chase symptoms like addiction to online games and use/misuse of drugs instead of tackling the wider problems like inequality that often drive those things up.

But there aren't any big flashing colors and lights when you get a paycheck.
there are if you buy the lights
If this happens there is going to be some large outrage.

imagination.
quest dialoug; "listen here employee, i need you to finish these reports by sunday"
quest description; finish the reports by sunday
reward; 20 exp, reputation with guild (work place), pay rise, paycheck
Why do I get the feeling the only reason the Government even gives a shit is because MMOs have reached the peg of popularity where they feel its time to pretend to give a shit so they can slap a tax on it? Yeah, MMO addiction is kind of a serious thing and all, I know that. I guess I'm just paranoid or something because the solution to every other thing that is legal but addictive according to the Government is to make people pay more for it.

Maybe if the real world wasn't so shitty for some people, they wouldn't be escaping into an MMO in the first place.
Don't treat the symptoms, treat the disease.

Modern government in a nutshell.
"Okay, you did what we said, but too bad, we're going to be your nanny anyways because Big Brother knows best!"
Don't treat the symptoms, treat the disease.
You could apply this to 95% of what society is doing when faced with problems. Everything's a bandaid patchjob. Nothing's ever actually fixed.
Bad drivers causing crashes? Let's put even more computers in the cars instead of just pulling the bad drivers' licenses!
People getting addicted to MMOs? Let's force bullshit nannying on the devs!
Economy in absolute shambles? Let's bail the dumbasses that caused it out and do fuck all to prevent them from doing it again!

Ugh. Fuck this society. So much bandaid patching going on its sickening.
this makes no sense. most mmos have a monthly (or whatever) subscription fee. theres no real way to avoid it unless you hack someones account but they'd just stop paying for it, so to play an mmo you have to pay the (taxed) fee. chances are, if you're paying for a monthly subscription, you have a job. theres probably some amount of people that pay for their mmos by doing illegal stuff, but i doubt a huge percentage of the playerbases are peddling coke and cooking meth to support their wow habits.
So how would they regulate it? Put some kind of timer on it that kicks you off after X amount of hours? Fuck that, if I want to sit in my mom's basement in my underwear and play WoW all day, thats my own choice.

I knew a guy who played WoW 24/7 apart from when he was selling weed.
Luckily I didn't let his weed needles get anywhere near me otherwise I wouldn't be typing this because I'd be huffing MMO's and injecting weeds too.
