Me and my bro want to upgrade our machines for the new year. Mine is newer than his, and is still running good. I was wondering if it would be worth it to swap parts between the 2 PCs. Anyway here are the specs of both:
Mine:
Motherboard: ASUS M4A78 PLUS AM3 770/SB700
VGA: SAPPHIRE| 100267L HD4870 1GB
CPU: AMD|PH II X3 720 BK AM3 2.8G
Memory: 2Gx2|OCZ OCZ2P10664GK
HD: 500G|SAMSUNG HD502HJ
PSU: OCZ|OCZ500MXSP 500W
(sorry for the weird formatting, I copied this right out of the old invoice)
My Brother's:
HD: 465gb
CPU: Intel core 2 duo e8400 @ 3.00ghz
Memory: 2.50 gb
GPU: GeForce 8800 gt 512.0 mb
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-D
Anyway, budget= $450 . We use them for gaming. Now do what you do best FP.
350 each, or 350 total?
$350 total.
I would definitely invest in more RAM for the computer with 2.5GB (4GB tends to be enough for most people), only replace the hard drives if they have bad sectors or if you don't have enough space on them.
I can't be bothered to search for US prices, I don't shop on US sites. So I can only offer guidelines. But what I do is search for graphics cards and processors that are compatible with whatever motherboard I have (I keep a tab open with its information), then Google the products, check reviews and decide whether they are worth getting or not.
Problem is, your machines are both pretty decent, and $350 isn't a lot for two computers if you want things like quad core processors (which would be good for gaming) and high-end graphics cards. Those tend to cost $150+ each. If there's any way that you could wait and get more money to invest in this, I would recommend that.
A 955 for your computer, 2 more GB of RAM for you, more RAM for your brother too, and maybe get him a 5770 / GTX 460 768mb
-snip didn't fully read specs-
Updated budget to $450. I hope its worth it.
Whose money is most of it? Or is it your parents or something?

And find out how many sticks of what capacity are in his PC and at what speeds.

It would also be nice to know what your brothers PSU is.
I wouldn't really bother upgrading anything in your computer, but your brother could use one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115057&cm_re=core_2_quad_q8400-_-19-115-057-_-Product
SLI would work with his mootherboard, too, but I don't recommend it with such an "old" card.
Maybe you could get a GTX 560, give your 4870 to your bro, and sell the 8800GT for ~60$ on ebay.
Yeah, as Shadaez said, we need the PSU, too.
Buy both of you could use a new CPU (955 for you, Core2Quad for him) and him 4 GB of RAM for $350, he's going to need a better GPU, too, you could get him a 4830 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131381&cm_re=4830-_-14-131-381-_-Product
That's $411
Or you could keep your CPU to save $100 and get a better GPU like a 460. You also might be able to save some money if his RAM isn't a weird quantity/capacity.

A 4830 performs identically to a 8800GT, there's no gain in that.
I would say, get his brother the Q8400 I posted (it'll work in his motherboard, I checked), and get yourself a GTX 560. Sell the 8800GT for some 50$ something, and buy RAM.

5770 is my choice, I have one. I can run everything on max, works awesome. And tiger direct has them for $130 if you get the nice XFX model.
460 > 5770

I think

Isn't the 460 on par with the 5830?

The GTX 460 is a tad better. Especially when you count in overclocking.

then the 5770 or the 5830?

A tad better than the 5830, even more with overclocking.
