I guess it's sortof the equivalent of having a demo of the game, except it's the full game? Nice way to do it though if you just put an older version of the game with less/older features, would probably encourage people who like it to buy it

Smart idea considering you don't want people to get viruses and like spekter said, bad copies.
It's more likely they are trying to build a foundation of trust with gamers by releasing decent games for free on the premise that if people enjoy it they will support it. It's worked in the past to varying degrees, and TBH it's a great step away from treating your potential customers like criminals. It's sad but this is a way to make a positive name for yourself in the industry these days.

On another note, I wonder if their request of asking people not to buy from resellers will be heard?
