New head of Minecraft Helen Chiang has revealed that the game had 74 million active users in December—the most in a month since it released nearly nine years ago.
usually those "[game] came out x years ago" things don't get me that bad but maaaan this one makes me feel old.
I only recently bought minecraft. I love to play it with friends, but they hardly play it. Any good non-cheat survival servers I could join?
I wonder what kind of game would it take to beat that

Mojang offers some cheap servers meant for small friend groups.
That's more than the population of quite a few countries (more than the UK) playing a single game, that's crazy.
I've heard a lot of people frustrated with the lack of meaningful updates to the game recently
They didn't really add shit since end of beta/alpha really. The only good updates were stuff under the hood, like how 1.10+ in comparison to 1.7.10 runs quite a lot better etc. There are a lot of amazing mods that pumped out more content on their release or in one mod update then Minecraft did the past 5 years. Its still hilarious how such a money cow never changed anything about the content released. On topic of the article, its not really mentioned if those 74mil are concurrent players? They compare it to PUBG which broke 3mil or Fortnite with 2mil concurrent players. "active users in December" can simply mean how many unique users did start the game in all of December. It is not really comparable with concurrent numbers, but it would still beat the games because those two didn't even sell/have 74mil unique users.

Problem with minecraft is basically all the servers fall into a few small categories: 1. high-player count laggy minigame server 2. epic gamer "no rules" anarchy servers where destroying is allowed, full of people who pay for OP gear 3. shitty servers with abusive admins your best bet is just go from server to server. dont spend much time progressing but rather seeing what the community/admins are like. Once you have servers that don't have admins that ban for "fuck" go ahead and get to work. Personally though, I think minecraft is better with small friend group servers. For the larger community servers, the bosses and everything are usually killed within a week at most.
I remember when facepunch had an Infiniminer thread going on, that was super fun. Then we all moved over to minecraft (creative).. after a while came the survival announcement and survival servers with all their bugs and unfinished-ness. Been a pretty long journey

all memes aside, I still hold this game extremely close to my heart. It's because of this game I met my online friend group.
usually those "[game] came out x years ago" things don't get me that bad but maaaan this one makes me feel old.
GTA 4 came out 9 years ago too. Fell any older?
Does Jeb, the lead dev on Minecraft after Notch left, still work at Mojang?
Does Jeb, the lead dev on Minecraft after Notch left, still work at Mojang?
Yeah he is the lead creative designer [editline]21st January 2018[/editline] Also remember when Creative was the only gamemode and the only reason why you would pay the 5 euro pricetag for the game was to use custom skins?
GTA 4 came out 9 years ago too. Fell any older?
no. gta iv did not age well.
Shame that the only times I play Minecraft these days are to enjoy it for a few weeks until it becomes fucking unplayable because of the slow attrition of 120+ mods. And that will never change, because Win10 edition will always be entirely vanilla and Java edition will always be shit and missing an api.
Minecraft's "release" version could barely be considered in beta. It was full of abandoned, half-finished features, it was missing at least 70% of it's promised features, it was buggy as shit, and it was still using what were pretty much placeholder graphics in a lot of places. I don't think I've played it at all since then, how much has it actually changed over the years?
it was still using what were pretty much placeholder graphics in a lot of places.
I don't think so.
That's more than the population of quite a few countries (more than the UK) playing a single game, that's crazy.
About 3 times more than Australia's population :wow:
I don't even know why would Microsoft buy minecraft and take it nowhere. Merchandising money?
While I can't be bothered to play it singleplayer these days, the cross-platform multiplayer in the Win10/Mobile/Xbox/Switch version really impressive with how easy it's made it to just create a survival world and fuck around with friends.
I don't think so.
Practically all of the mobs in the game had zero animation aside from their legs.
