I found this really old computer on the curb on my way to smoke, and, being me and loving exploring old technology, I took it home. It need an AT keyboard and a serial mouse. I bought a PS/S to AV adapter and booted it up. It passed POST perfect, and booted into Windows 95! It was the oldest computer I have seen yet. I hope to post specs, pics, and experiences with it soon, but, as of now, its very late... Ill keep you updated! ;D
The best things in life are free. I found a 2002 compaq evo beside a dumpster with a broken hard drive. Gotta love computer illiterates.
Daaaamn! I love how people dont realize simple errors and think the whole things broken. But if it werent for them i wouldnt have a sweet newold computer :3
They probably threw it out because they had a new computer and didn't know anyone who'd buy it for more than $5
Always a possibility :P
Um... I find working Pentium 4 systems in the trash all the time. They make great projects, like linux firewalls, linux file servers, and quick and dirty XP shitbox machines.
Pics?
Buy this make file server If it's running Win95 it's probably got real old hardware in it. But all a file server needs is a good HD, a working NIC and an OS that can handle general file serving protocols. Such as Linux. Couple things though: 1) DO NOT GET UBUNTU. It's got too much crammed into it. I'm not sure if the "rolling release is bad for servers" thing applies to file servers, so if not get Sabayon (Gentoo prepacked with a binary package manager) or Arch. 2) If the BIOS is too old you might need to use the "sda=stroke" kernel option. I remember reading that somewhere to get around HD limits. Or something like that - it's been too long to say for sure.
Ill put pics tomorrow, a bit late atm for that :P
I still use a 2001 Sony Vaio most of the time. :sigh:
:O
i found one with windows 98 on it, and some old ass game, with a CRT and keyboard and shit, that was fucking awesome.... to smash :D
derp
Ok? I have an extensive collection of old computers and I don't go posting pointless threads about it.
But this one was found in the street

There may not even be enough RAM for a modern Linux distro to run comfortably. NetBSD or some embedded Linux distro might work pretty well.

That's like posting this: "I am not interested." in a thread, randomly, it's dumb, why did you even post if you dont care?
Buy this make file server
Eew. I hate their green drives. I have a 500GB green drive from them out of my WD MyBook, and the slow RPM speed makes file transfers painful, even over SATA. 16~23MB/s average is not very practical, when my 7200RPM drives give me anywhere between 70~80MB/s.
had a cousing that created an overclocking cooling system and experimented with it with an old ass computer. The fucking processor ran on like -10 C°.
Daaamn, sick O.o! I saw a vid where people tried overclocking by a lot using liquid nitrogen. It burned out >.>
It's fun watching people overclock Celeron D processors up to 7.1GHz on liquid nitrogen. :v:

He was using the wrong charger, I had a charger already. I paid £1 for a Tablet PC.
WHAAAA... Dude, thats the luckiest thing ive ever heard. Still cant help but wonder... Why even charge you the £1 O.o
Well, It was a car boot. If he advertised it as being for free, it would've just been took by someone willing to sell it on probably, And that's not what he wanted. But, By leaving it there, not many people asked how much it was, so I guess that you had to actually be interested in having it to use.
Handler's fee.
Trueee
Pfft, in Utah we have these shops called DIs, at any time you can find like five Windows 95 machines for like ten bucks each.
Mine cost a little elbow grease :3
I got an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (single core) Socket 754, 256MB PC133, and no harddrive for $7.99 :v:
We found a pretty new Dell with Windows 7 out on the curb in front of our apartment one day. The only problem it had was the monitor was broken so one corner wouldn't display. About like this, but with a smaller damaged area.
