• Windows Update won't run on Windows Vista SP2

So I'm trying to fix this Sony vaio laptop, it's running Windows Vista ultimate sp2. When I open windows update, I get the red x, when I press the check for updates button I get a message saying Windows update can't check for updates because the service isn't running. I check the services list and it says Windows update service is running. I stop the service and start it again, same error. Then I downloaded the Microsoft fix it program and set it to automatic zone, after troubleshooting is complete the issues found was was fixed except for "Problems installing rexent updates". I reboot and try the fix it program again and I get the same issues found and same fix status. The fix it program was unable to send the information after finishing the troubleshooting. So after that Windows update service is still broken. Lots of reboots and virus scans later, same issue. Any idea to fix this up to this point? I feel like just installing windows 7 on it and calling it a day.
Did you try re-registering the WU DLLs? (scroll down the page) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 If re-registering the DLLs doesn't fix the problem, just install Windows 7.
Not yet but I'll give that a try. I'd think Fix it would fix it but nope.
