Who would want to hurt wurm? It's barely competition for anyone.

Couldn't they use that money to get more protection against the attacks?

DDoS attacks aren't entirely within their control, that's the host's problem.
When this happened, all the servers were brought down and the host shut them down for about a day to prevent the attack, but the devs of Wurm aren't entirely satisfied with how the host has been handling things so they've been in the process of moving to another host since the attack started.

They did a mass ban of a bunch of players using hacked clients a month ago, and they've been suffering from DDoSes ever since, so like, yeah.
