• Pop and CPU fan will not spin..

So just put together my new rig: Asus m4a78 PRO mobo Radeon HD 5770 600w OCZ Modxstream psu Antec 300 case AMD phenom II X4 quad core black edition with stock cooler ect. Plugged it all in, installed all the components correctly (as far as i know..) crossed my fingers for my 1st build to be a working one and pressed the on button. Heard a slight Pop.. I think.. i turned it off just in case, look around and all seemed normal and tried again, didn't get a pop. The graphics card fan was spinning, case fans spinning but the cpu fan was not. As a side note i was getting no display (tried HDMI DVI ect. still nothing) soo any suggestions? Hoping for the best but expecting the worse here.
you have the cpu fan plugged in all the way. i did that one time. i just didnt push down hard enough for it to plug in.
you have the cpu fan plugged in all the way. i did that one time. i just didnt push down hard enough for it to plug in.
Hmm Do you mean the power cable for the fan or the whole heat sink itself?
Usually CPU fans have a connector hanging off that are 4 pin, and a pin header called CPU_FAN (typically) make sure it's in the right direction too.

Ill take a picture... [editline]11:02PM[/editline] It is in as far is it will go. Top right is where it's plugged in
Jesus Christ, what kind of camera do you have? Also, did you have to force it in? If so, its most likely in backwards, and you bent/broke the plastic guard.
Op you didn't install the stand offs
Op you didn't install the stand offs
Oh shit :( These fuckers here OP: You better find them, screw them in, and hope to god you didn't fry everything attached directly to your mobo.

Dammit that's a stupid mistake. Also Thanks for telling me Also it was just some random camera i found lying around.. nothing special. Also FUCK i hope i didn't just fry all my expensive shiny new components.. [editline]08:21AM[/editline] I was reading a guide and it said i should use the screws that came with the case when installing the motherboard and did not mention standoffs so i ignored the brass screws that came with it and just used some normal screws.. i take it that is very bad?
Shit dude, that's tough. Without the standoffs there's actually a relatively high chance you might have fucked something up with your computer. If you're lucky though it'll still function. I once misconnected a power cable and it blew out my mobo's intergrated sound card, but the rest still worked, so hopefully even if your motherboard took damage it'll be relatively minor/fixable.

Ill replace the normal screws i put in with the brass ones and just hope it will work :frown: [editline]08:43AM[/editline] What should go in there? What i had in there :ohdear: Replace all of the screws i had in there like that with the brass ones right?
The brass standoffs go under the motherboard it sits on them then use the screws on top.
The pop sound COULD be an exploding capacitor. I'm not saying it was and I hope it wasn't,but if the PC still doesn't work after you tried everything, check if any of the capacitors on the motherboard is out of shape or leaking. This is how a capacitor looks:
The brass standoffs go under the motherboard it sits on them then use the screws on top.
I'm pretty sure it's already like that.. You can sort of see the brass in the picture through the hole
I'm pretty sure it's already like that.. You can sort of see the brass in the picture through the hole
Stand offs aren't screws so much as spacers that keep your motherboard separate from your case. If they're already in place, then we're probably misdiagnosing your problem, though pops followed by none-spinning CPU fans generally point towards missing stand offs. If they're already in then you probably have another problem. Thunderbolt might be right, but I don't think liquid electrolyte capacitors are used in motherboards anymore, not after the trouble back in the early 2000's with capacitors popping constantly. CPU fan not spinning is rather worrying though, especially when it's plugged in to power. Considering the pop followed by the none-spinning fan, I would definitely double check that there's nothing that could possibly short out the motherboard.

It looked like they all had stand offs under..apart from one unscrewed a screw and low and behold.. no stand off under it and some sort of dust under the screw.. Well this doesn't look good
Well shit, was it screwed in all the way? Generally this would not be a problem because the rest of the spacers would keep the mobo separate from the case, and the mobo should not bend enough to short circuit anything really important. However if you screwed it in enough to bend the mobo so that it touched the case, you might have a problem. I suggest trying to turn the computer on again with that piece unscrewed, if no permanent damage has been done, it should function once the short is removed. Also examine for visible damage. When I blew the integrated sound card on mine, it left a black burn mark on the backside of the mobo, if your short has damaged something, it might have left visible markings.

Any results yet?
Right. Took out the mobo and put a stand off where the short was and screwed it all in place, feels a lot more secure now too. Just out of interest while im plugging it all back in.. I think i might have missed this before. i think i forgot to have anything in this.. i just realised there was a 4pin plug that fits that hanging off.. what does this do? its just next to the heat sink
Plug your PSU into it if you have a connector like this:

Oh derp, yeah that provides power to the CPU. That would explain quite a bit actually.
Yeah Whoops. But yeah feels a lot more safer now anyway! going to try it now Wish me luck.. [editline]10:58AM[/editline] Nope. No luck.. Still no display and heat sink fan still doesn't spin.. Graphics card fan spins and so do case fans still. Mobo light is on It's all plugged in No display however (at all) and CPU fan does not spin.. there are no obvious physical signs something fried but something could have done [editline]11:02AM[/editline] Any ideas now?
I think that maybe You'll need a new mobo..?
:ohdear:... Is there anything else it could be?
Is the mobo's built in speaker hooked up any everything? Does the mobo make any beeping sounds on start up?

The first time i built a pc. Everything was done. Plugged it in, started it up and fried my psu and motherboard in one run! Do not forget. :v:
Is the mobo's built in speaker hooked up any everything? Does the mobo make any beeping sounds on start up?
Nothing :frown: [editline]03:26PM[/editline] Should I try to claim the warranty on the mobo or just buy a new one..? :frown:
