• New to WINE, need some help

I installed WINE, followed some guides, and eventually got TF2+STEAM installed and running, however there are several things that are 'off'. 1. The game is EXTREMELY laggy, even with the graphics options on Low and a res of 800x600 2. My sound is really choppy and makes crackling noises. I had this with Vista, but all I had to do is update drivers. So do I need to install any Windows drivers? or will this make it worse. Oh also using Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks.
In steam, right click TF2 and go to Properties and click "Set Launch Options" and type: -dxlevel 81 This may help your laggy problem, not sure about your sound problem though.
Install directx 9 via an app called winetricks
One thing that I have found to make steam games run a lot better in wine is to turn off the steam community in-game overlay.

Just wondering, how is it to play games through a virtual PC? Is it possible?
Before, it was not. But, the new Virtualbox supports 3d applications. The good thing about a virtual machine is that it gives 100% compatibility for applications. However, the load on the host machine can be unbearable depending on your system specs. A relatively new processor and 2-4 Gb of RAM should be fine. Otherwise, WINE is pretty much your only option.
I fixed my sound options ( or i did, now it gives me a 'sound cannot be used' error.) but it's still laggy. I'm going to try out virtualbox and try my luck there. Oh I also tried the dxlevel 81, it seemed to help, but not by much.
It's so hard for people to read the sticky
It's so hard for people to read the sticky
I did read the sticky, i followed several guides on line, and I'm still having problems with a game that most people seem to get working, which is why I made the thread.

The only games I like are Dawn of War, most valve games and Quake Wars. [editline]06:10PM[/editline] And really non-demanding games like Secret of Monkey island and Geometry wars. [editline]06:10PM[/editline] Trackmania Nations Forever can come too [editline]06:11PM[/editline] I'm not the kinda guy who needs everything set to max to play a game, aslong as it's not messing with view distance in FPS games :v:
At the top of the sticky:

and in the end, the chance of the app working is minimal.:
I've already gotten the app working, I just needed help wrinkling out some small issues. The game in question is very popular with WINE users, and many have success with it. I really don't see what the big deal here is. Sorry for the mistake, I will find some other forum next time I have WINE based questions.
