My computer has been chugging at newer games and my motherboard is kinda busted. So I'm considering upgrading.
Current specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz
Graphics card: XFX 9600GT 512MB
RAM: Corsair 2GB 800Mhz
HDD: 500GB 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair 520W HX
New specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P61-USB3-B3 £64.53
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz £161.10
CPU cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro £15.03
Graphics card: XFX HD 6870 1GB £139
RAM: 2x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333MHz £28.06
HDD: Current HDD
PSU: Current PSU
Total: £407.72
So is this a good build, could I get some of the parts cheaper?
Get a 4gb kit with 1600 mhz ram instead.
And get a 560 TI instead of the 6870.
Motherboard only supports up to 1333MHz so it would just downclock it anyway.
Get a better mobo then.
Also I'm trying to stick close to my £400 budget better motherboard, 560TI and better RAM would push the price up to £500.
Get a better mobo then.
no mobo supports over 1333 by default
although all this means is you have to set the specs yourself

OP there's no point getting a 2500k with a H61 mobo, either swap to the non K or bump up to a P67 mobo like the P67A-G43 or -G45
and get a hyper 212+ over the F7P
[editline]3rd July 2011[/editline]
or cut out the aftermarket cooler to get a better mobo, you can still do mild overclocks on SB with the stock cooler then get a 212+ at a later date
getting an aftermarket cooler with H61 is kinda pointless because you can't overclock
I've got a revised budget of ~£450 now.
Revised specs:
Motherboard: MSI P67A-G45 £94.98
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz £161.10
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus £26.72
Graphics card: XFX HD 6870 1GB £139
RAM: 2x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333MHz £28.06
Total: £449.86
Also regarding the ram would it better to get 2 of Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333MHz or get 1 of G-Skill 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
The corsair RAM is cheaper, so go with it.
You're just having it out of a case?
I already have a CM690 case.
People are saying in the comments for the cooler that it's quite tall. My case has about 17cm from cpu socket to side of the case, do you think that would be enough space?
the 212+ is regular size 120mm heatsink, it'll fit in the 690 (and pretty much any case with a 120mm back exhaust and no obstructions on the side panel like other fans)
Cool, so you think this is the best I'm going to get for my money?
you might be able to get a better mobo for a similar price, I know on scan if you buy a P67A-GD65 it comes with a free hyper 212+ but I don't know if that's just scan
maybe check scan's prices against ebuyers, scan doesn't have free 5 day delivery but sometimes works out cheaper anyway

would you say it's worth the extra ~£10 for this motherboard?

link doesn't work
I would assume he means the GD53, in which case yes.

yeah that looks fine
make sure you check http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/index.aspx, right now you can save £9 on the graphics card but they'll change somewhere between 1-3pm
Parts have arrived, everything seems to be working great. Overclocked the CPU to 4.5GHz running at 38c idle and 57c on 100% usage.

Well it's off by a couple of degrees but today is hotter.
Nice, how much in total did you spend?
£458.30 that included next day shipping.
