You know you're rushing to make deadline when your story is a summary rewrite of a PCGamer interview with a rich dude who's spent a fuckton of money on Star Citizen.

I wonder how much fun those people will have with Star Citizen when it is out. They pretty much buy all the content before it is out, no need to "work" for those ships anymore. I can see that having those right away is probably nice too, but for me it would remove most of the fun to buy those big ships with the work I did ingame.
It's almost as if they interviewed the same person
It's almost like they didn't even interview the guy and just skimmed the PC Gamer interview and wrote a press release version of it. As in, they literally did that.
So, crazy rich guy buys a bunch of shit. Next week they are going to get the crazy guy that got money from the oil industry that bought probably the same amount of shit in CSGO (while having a hooker there)

Also, most of the larger shps are intended to be flown by a group, sometimes 20+ players. You'll be able to hire NPC AI, but they won't be able to work as effectively as live players, so owning a fleet of larger ships all by yourself is kind of a liability. I heard of one guy who bought a Completionist pack specifically because he intends on setting up a ship rental service in the game, renting his own allotment of ships out to players for profit. Assuming the game actually takes off, those pixel ships will probably be a better investment then a boat.
Assuming the game actually takes off, those pixel ships will probably be a better investment then a boat.
I don't know about that. In short, the game's not intended to be P2W or excessively grindy, because it doesn't rely on the same business models as a F2P or a monthly-sub MMO. In a F2P, the grind is terrible because the devs want the premium skip-the-grind options to be as enticing as possible. In a game with a monthly subscription fee, the grind is in very low drop rates and requiring massive amounts of time dedicated to farming reputation/currency/drops/whatever in order to keep players paying month after month even after they've exhausted the story content. Chris Roberts has said he hates grinds like this. SC intends on shutting the pledge store down before the game launches, and the game's pay-once-play-forever, so it won't be leveraging P2W-like cash shop mechanics, nor does it have a reason to string players out for as long as possible to keep the sub fees rolling in. The progression grind can be much more moderate. One month after the final beta reset, when the economy is live for real, anyone who plays modest amounts of the game should be able to afford their own Constellation (a $150-275 ship). Although it must be said that the small number of people who've forked multiple thousands over, like this guy, have definitely skipped themselves a bunch of time n amassing this entire collection of ships, but where's the fun in bypassing the entire low range of the game? They better have goals in the game or else they'll get bored fast. It's worth noting that it's been stated that the stock equipment that comes on ships, including ships purchased with real cash during the development era, is kind of crap compared to what will be available in-game. Stock loadout equipment is 1/10 to 2/20 on the power scale, where 10/10 would be the best gear possible in the game. And the really big ship, the $2,500 Javelin destroyer, is sold as decommissioned military hardware, so all the weapons are stripped out completely. Anyone taking a Javelin out on day 1 is just asking to be the first in the game to have their Javelin stolen. Anyone who buys up ships with cash expecting to enjoy the P2W-y benefits that you'd expect from spending hundreds on the typical F2P has only themselves to blame for losing sight of the fact that the pledges are to fund the game, and the ships are a gift in kind. And there are definitely people who think they're bypassing some massive grind that sub-$50-tier plebs will have to suffer through, and it's going to be glorious to watch them realize their hubris.
I assumed that the limited edition ships, while they might not be the most competitive option, it will only go up in price as more people get into the game. Even if its so shit that its nothing but a gigantic space hat.
All limited ships will be obtainable in-game, and there are a bunch of ships being built that will never be put up for cash sale on the store, so the only way to get them will be in-game. The number of owners of those limited ships is only going to go up once the game goes fully live. The people who bought the limited number of Esperia Glaives, for example -- they were priced at $300 but they're actually on par with a ship that's priced about half that; a few people who paid for them were unhappy that they didn't buy $300 worth of power, and those are the people who're expecting their ship investments to be P2W'ish. Those limited ships sell for more than their retail price on the grey market right now, but once the game begins and anyone can earn their way into one of these limited ships, the value should fall towards its actual in-game value as a usable ship.
