So I've been meaning to replace my cruddy 2.1 system from the last millenia with a propper 5.1 surround system. Mind you we are talking about PC sound systems.
Now, All those people saying to get the Logitech z-5500 can go fuck themselves because it's stupidly overpriced and anywhere near full blast will do nothing but rupture your eardrums. Instead, I have my eyes set on the butterzone pricerange of 5.1 systems, where affordability and good-enough-for-non-professional-or-non-audiophile-use meets. I am, of course talking about the sub-$100 category. There is, however, a small problem. This pricerange contains quite a few choices and I simply do not have enough experience in this field to make an educated selection. I therefor turn to the helpful and (mostly) friendly nerd population of facepunch.
As previously stated, this pricerange contains several systems. I shall now list them.
The Logitech x-540 AND the Logitech x-530 (the 530 being a lesser and cheaper model of the 540),
The Creative inspire T6200
and the Sony SRS-D511
I'm sure there are others in the same price range but these are the ones currently available from my retailer of choice.
To make helping me easier, I shall make some simple questions to answer.
1. How do the x-540 and the x-530 compare in terms of quality, both in sound and in build, and price/performance? (the 530 being about $20 cheaper
2. Quite simply, how do all these sound systems compare to eachother?
3. Have any of you had a bad experience with any of these sound systems? Such as breaking after a short time, short wires, picking up interference etc?
And that's pretty much it, I sould appreciate it if people provide legit and logical reasons for choosing one model over another and not just saying "cause it's better", because your personal preference is not necessarily correct.
Thanks in advance.
I had a set of VideoLogic ZXR-500s a while ago.
Cheap and cheerful.
Also my dad has some Altec Lansings that he swears by. Just trying to find out what they're called now.
Can't find anything on them right now, I'll ask him about them when he gets home. Altec Lansing is generally a pretty good brand to check out though.
I have Logitech X540 and quality of sound is much better then on my friend's X530, it also looks better and has useful control panel, instead of stupid X530's buttons. And 20$ is problem for you? It is only 20$ nothing cool can cost like that.

I don't have a problem paying an extra 20 bux if it's better, I was just wondering, if there was no noticeable difference between the two then the cheaper alternative would be the obvious choice. Since according to you this is not the case, I think I might exclude the 530 from my list entirely.
Taking a quick look at the specs of the Logitechs: the more expensive one has a 'control center' and 'game console adapter'. The speakers themselves are the same, at least in appearance and specs. That's where the extra $20 comes in I'd say.
Of those four listed, I'd go with the cheaper Logitech, unless you need those other items. I don't like the specs on the Creative and I think the Sony is overpriced.
I'd say the X-540's. I have them and they're great. The X-540's control panel is useful if you have your speaker where you can't reach them as easily and the matrix mode is great for 2 channel sounds giving it a surround sound feel.
I'm listening to the X-540s right now, and they are pretty damn good speakers
Just looked at the X-530s, I think it would be worth it to go for the 540s.
I can vouch for the very solid build quality of the x540s, I have a rickety desk and they fall sometimes. Not even a scratch.
I have the x-540. it's amazing (to the limit of my crappy sound card)
I got X-540's Great quality sound, they work at max on any high bass music and they don't give up on the sound, And any kind of damage from having the sound up that high wont affect it.
So I see a lot of people heartily recommending the x-540, but nearly no posts about the sony and the creative system. I already know the x-540 is superb and at the moment I am planning to purchase it. I do not want 500 recommendations for something I already know is great, what I want to know is how the sony and creative systems compare to the x-540.
not that I don't appreciate the comments, but most of the praise for the x-540 seems to be coming from people who own one and haven't even heard of the other two, and as everyone should know, popular does not always mean better.
I am bumping this thread in the hopes that someone with a bit of knowledge in this field will give me further valuable insight in how the sony and creative compare to the x-540.
Personally, when I ask about several items and everyone has great opinions on one of the choices, I don't think it's because the other items are great but their owners are shy about posting opinions. I think it's because not many people own the other ones, because the popular choice is that much better.
I got the X-350s and they sound awesome, but the best part was they were only $45 on eBay

:v:
PC speakers suck.

And get a good sound card. They can be the best speakers in the world, but if your audio chip is a piece of crap it doesn't matter for shits.
