I know there's plenty of programs out there, but which ones does Facepunch recommend?
For the record, I need an original DVD ripped so I can cut certain scenes and re-burn it.
I also know there are programs out there that do some decrypting. Any recommendations there?
DVD Shrink can handle most DVDs, but since it's old and no longer updated it can't crack the copy protection on some newer ones. Worth a shot though. Also has a re-author feature so you can choose which videos you want to keep from the disk and which you want to discard, plus it will compress the DVD so you can get a full DVD-9 on a DVD-5 easily.
(Works fine for me since I use AnyDVD HD to remove copy protection first anyway)
Handbrake - http://handbrake.fr/ used in conjunction with DVD43 - http://www.dvd43.com/ is awesome. Both are free too.
DVDFab is the best/most professional thing out there.
I've been using it and I am really impressed.
Latest version has whatever feature you can think of (or you need, at least)

The .VOB files in a DVD's video_ts folder are actually mpeg in disguise.
If you literally copy the files to your desktop and change their extension to .mpg they will play in WMP. If the movie is split up in multiple parts just use Windows Live Movie maker to stitch them into one whole file. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-movie-maker
For DVD copying, I use Nero Recode paired with AnyDVD HD. Fast as hell, and flawless 4.3GB backups.
DVD ripping apps are a dime a dozen, and most of them are free. But why is it taking so long for "easy to use" Blu-ray rippers to hit the market? The format has been out for years now. It's taken me MONTHS of searching, but I finally found a good Blu-ray ripper worth my money:

Best of all, it rips to just about ANY format, and for ANY hardware device, which is pretty awesome. :D

My PS3 won't play a non-restricted PAL backup I made of The Simpsons Movie I got for my birthday. So I copied the VOB files to my desktop, stitched them together with the CMD prompt, and renamed it to .MPG. Now my PS3 plays the PAL-formatted movie just fine from a USB stick. WTF Sony?
(My PS3 is completely unmodded and not jailbroken by any means. OFW 3.15)
Nero Recode 3 and AnyDVD. :frog:

I use Handbrake on my Mac, works perfectly and is on Windows too.
