I heard the acer 974 was pretty good, But I'd like to see what FP has to say.
I'm going to be doing alot of gaming and I understand that desktops > laptops, But i'm going on holiday for some months and can't carry my desktop around.
Only post if your willing to help, please no flaming about how much I'm spending.
thanks fp

That kinda defeats the point of a laptop being portable if you want to haul a giant screen with you everywhere...
Not going to happen if you only use for browsing/simple tasks

I can easily lift a laptop with a 17.3" screen

Obviously i'm going to be gaming, a lot.
Gaming laptops are generally very bad, or hot.
So is anyone going to help me or are we just going to start the "laptops r dum" bandwagon
Obviously i'm going to be gaming, a lot.
Laptops are not made for gaming. Also not recommended at all because components are easily and promptly outdated, and you can't change them. The ratio performance/price is very poor.
And every of them heat up/are noisy.

Oh please.
I have a (multimedia) laptop but I consider that gaming laptops are completely dumb.
Asus G73 probably.
Or whatever the name was, I think it was G73.

He didn't create a thread asking the opinions of fp on laptops.
----
A buddy of mine has the asus g74 something with the first gen core i7 extreme. Very good build quality. I think the newer g74s have done nothing but improved.
The new ones have gtx560m, if you need more, some of the msi laptops have the 570m.
Please, leave my thread if you aren't interested in helping. I'm not interested in your opinion, clearly.
also I don't give a damnfuck about the price/preformance, otherwise I wouldn't be paying £3000. couldn't care less if i could get a desktop for £1000 with the same preformance.

Yeah I thought so, I've been looking at the g74's for a while and they seem to be the best, Can never be sure though.

Just buy your laptop if you don't want to hear differents opinions goddamn. Though don't complain later if we didn't warn you.

It's a pretty good laptop, but It does get hot, but then again. What gaming laptop doesn't?

My sis has a 15 " 1920x1080.
Gateway is the way to go.
I recommend any Clevo retailer laptops. Sager, Eurocom, and Malibal are retailers for those laptops but I think they might be US only I don't know. I have a Malibal 17" model also with the res you want and I love it. The price is pretty low and I even got a 6970m in it for a reasonable deal. If you really want to spend a lot (Which I recommend you don't but it is your money), the Malibal X7200 can get pretty decked out with SLI/Crossfire "Insert beast card here" and high end i7's all for under 3,000. These Clevo laptops are really customizable as well and have a lot of variation and can even be barebone constructed at home if you want.
Found this http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/viperIII/
Compared it with alienware, exact same tech for about £1000+ less.
Please customize it (2860QM CPU, not the XM, max out the cpu & gpu (sli) & ram (8gb 1600mhz)
tell me what you think fp, I'm thinking that alienware would prehaps have better cooling, ignoring that its over £1000 pounds more.

Please stop shitting up the laptop threads.
If he wants a laptop, then he's going to get a laptop.
Dell XPS 17, you can get the highest spec one for well under 3 Grand: Sandy Bridge i7, nVidia GT555 3GB (with or without 3D capabilities), 1080p screen (with or without 3D), up to 16GB RAM, fantastic keyboards, decent speakers, 2 500GB hard drives, blu-ray drive. I'm sure there's an option for an SSD as well, not too sure. Really nice laptops, I've got one myself.

^ still considering this, if anyone would like to look.
Alienware laptops suck really REALLY hard
Their build quality is abysmal, their hinges creak, the cooling is so shit that the board practically MELTS from the heat, and to top it off
massively overpriced.
My suggestion?
an asus laptop.
[editline]21st October 2011[/editline]
Also gaming laptops tend to have the battery life of about ten minutes.

I disagree, have you ever owned one? I own an Alienware M15X and the cooling is good, the battery has a stand on it to raise it off the ground to allow good airflow.
The build quality is solid, no hinges creak for me at all. It cost me £2000 but money well spent the i7 840XM(QM?) never slows down and I have this thing on 15 hours a day sometimes in 30c ambient temperature rooms.
Overall highly impressed with my purchase. the m17x has better gpu options than mine, i only have a 460m in this and 8gb ram
I think i'm going with this laptop, however there is 2 of them which are pretty much the same except for the screen, Which should I choose, 60hz matte or 120hz glossy?
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexII3D/ (glossy)
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexII-17/ (matte, you need to click the drop down menu for the screen)
Glossy is shit if the sun shines onto it.
But amazing in dark rooms.
I know the difference between glossy and matte, just what about 60HZ and 120HZ?
120 hz is better than 60 IMO, but depends on what you do. No point in getting 120 hz, and expecting to run it 120 hz on BF3. ( You're spending money on something you're never going to get anything good out of. )
But for source games etc, go go go.
Cause 120 hz is only working when running 120 fps.
Like 60 hz = 60 fps.
120 hz go go go.
My god are people unhelpful.
Tip: The highest spec gaming notebook is ROUGHLY equivalent to a $1000-1500 desktop build.
Anyways, here you go: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7280s1-clevo-x7200-p-3200.html?wconfigure=yes
SLI GTX 580Ms
i7-980x
Be advised this thing will have almost NO battery life.
[editline]22nd October 2011[/editline]
But tbh, the diminishing returns for the higher priced laptops are quite high, so in reality, a $1500 laptop will probably have 75% performance of a $3000 laptop rather than 50%.
[editline]22nd October 2011[/editline]
I've never heard of those laptops on that site you linked, but the specs look damn good for the price.

Thanks that looks great, I'll try it out.
That Vortex II looks pretty good to be fair, I would get one if I had the cash.
Sorry if you're not interested in opinions, but if you're going on a holiday for a few months, why not buy a pretty good gaming laptop (without being extreme) and save the extra money for some new computer love when you get home? The 7*** and GTX 6** will be released by then, and you'll get a better computer in the end. I'm not trying to troll or say you're dumb for wanting a laptop, but if you would elaborate, people like ADT would probably stop asking. It might be annoying that people ask questions you find irrelevant, but answering them is easier than just telling them to get out. They're trying to help you make a make the best choice like pretty much everybody else in here.

Thanks for the advice, but I already have a maxed pc at home and I defenately won't be upgrading it for atleast a year, I'd like to get a good run out of my 2 5970's and etc before I trash them.
Gonna state the obvious but dont forget some headphones and a mouse with mouse mat to game on.
