What temperature should my hard drive be operating at?

I've just been running speccy and it keeps complaining because my hard drive keeps reaching 56 degrees. Is this normal?

Probably should have said before, it's a shitty old maxtor hard drive. It's about five years old, but it's in a new antec 300 case with a good airflow
Mine's running at 58 degrees C or 137 degrees F
Seems a little warm, most drives stay at ~30C with good ventilation.

That's very abnormal if it is a standary 3.5 inch SATA 7200RPM drive

Should I be backing up my data then?
Unless your hitting 80c it is generally nothing to worry about, just expect a slightly reduced life span.

I thought it was around 50c for the limit of recommended hard drive temps (with newer hard drives)
<50 degrees celcius is good, but unless you climb to about 70 i think it will just reduce life span, mine's at 37 degrees celcius and i have reasonably good ventilation.
30-40 is good.
However I have a backup drive that I occasionally run in an external dock with no ventilation. It's gotten so hot that I've been unable to touch it. (Seagate 7200.10...)
I can't see it lasting much longer to be honest
