For a while now, when ever I attempt to use my mic it'll be on mute no matter what I do. Well, except for when I test it in the windows microphone test. It'll unmute then, and only then, but the quality is terrible.
I don't believe it's a problem with the computer, the little mute button on the mic stays yellow, and no matter how many times I click on it it stays yellow.
Got any ideas?
Reinstall audio drivers?
You can get the drivers from your computer manufacturer's/sound card manufacturer's website.

Is there a program to detect it?
Piriform Speccy can grab the specs of (nearly) all the components of your computer, including the sound card.
Google that and download/install it and give us a screenshot or whatever it says for your sound card.
