My ISP says I am guarenteed 1.5mb/s download speeds generally however whenever I start downloading something like from nVidia website which has very fast servers it starts off at around 2MB/s and steadily drops till it hits around 120kb/s.
What the fuck is going on here?
Most likely either the server was using a lot of bandwidth at the time, or it throttles your download speed to ensure that all its visitors get equal opportunity to download. Just because your internet connection is guaranteed to have 1.5MB/sec download doesn't mean all servers will upload that fast.

Even with my shit internet I get 1MB/s from nvidia site.
you think that's bad? I get 1 to 1.5mb/sec from australian servers, but if I download something from the US, where pretty much everything is based, I get like 70kb/sec. It's as bad as my old connection. What's the point of a fast connection if it only works where there's pretty much no downloads?
Are you talking mega[b]bytes[/b] or mega[b]bits[/b]?
In Australia at least they advertise connections in bits, so I might buy a 1.5 megabit connection. 1.5 megabits is roughly equal to 150 kilobytes, so 120 kb/s is a pretty normal download speed for that connection. If your connection is 1.5 megabytes/s then try downloading something from Steam, I generally find they download at your maximum rate.
Depends on your harddrive. Your harddrive can only download as fast as it can write, if I remember correctly. Just for an example if your harddrive writes at 1000 RPM, you WILL get shitty speeds when downloading and making those tests.
Get a download manager such as IDM

192 KB/s~ is your max speed with a 1.5 mb/s internet connection. (1.5 / 8 (turn bits into bytes) = .1875 X 1024 = 192 (.1875 of a megabyte))

5400rpm writes at over 150MB/s and the standard is now 7200rpm.

Here in Toronto, it's about $60/month for a 25mbit down and 1mbit up. It also has a limit of 125GB/month. The only reason we upgraded so high is because we kept hitting our monthly limit. Anyone know a better ISP in Toronto than Rogers?

Do you have hughesnet? because that is exactly what I am going through, The say on bad days downloads are suppose to be only 450KB/s and I never max more then 130 at best

I have 768K(b) so that's .75 of a Mb, and I get download speeds lower than 100KB/s it's annoying, esp. since I don't know if it's browsing closer to 768KB/s or not. I hate my ISP.

1.5 Mb is... 192KB. Oh I get it now. So then that means .75Mb is...96KB :saddowns:, GOD DAMMIT!!1 But I do get 116KB/s at times. Anomaly is anomalous.

I actually get 5 megabytes or like 33 megabits. Not to brag. I can't really brag cause 99mbit internet is out. :blush:
