• $600-$800 Budget Build: What Would Be Best?

I'm not that certain I'll actually buy a desktop, but recently my Laptop (an HP) pretty much died (I think the processor or HD overheated and burnt out. I'm on my parent's laptop right now), so I've been thinking about how much better it'd be if instead I just got a desktop PC for all my PC needs. And the best kind of PC is one you build yourself. So I'd like to compile a hypothetical list of parts that are both long lasting and cheap. I mean, I'm still going to get my laptop fixed and try to get one more year out of it, but this list would do me good in the future. This rig would include the Monitor, Tower, and Sound (Although with an HDMI cable I could just hook a tower up to the LCD TV I have, and hypothetically that would take care of Monitor and Sound. Again, hypothetically.).
Since you said monitor is optional here: Links: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151188 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131374 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220537 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.585954 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.576624 If you need a monitor I'll make a new one, but you're probably not going to get Sandy Bridge

If you want to go AMD this is better for your money Links: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151188 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103181 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220537 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.585954 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.580614 [editline]9th January 2011[/editline] If you want a monitor, drop the GPU down to a 6870 and you'll be able to fit in a monitor
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Since my laptop is pretty much gone for good, I'll probably end up going with one of these lists soon. If anyone has any more suggestions, feel free to post.
Well, what do you want to do? The i5-2500k is a much better processor than the Phenom II x4 965. Also, the 2500k is a very good overclocker. On the other hand, the 6950 will handle every single video game there is without any trouble (except for Metro 2033) and it knocks the 6850 out of the water. The Phenom II x4 965 is not a bad processor in any way though. And if you can spare some extra money: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144461&cm_re=geil_4gb-_-20-144-461-_-Product (1600MHz RAM) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=samsung_F3-_-22-152-185-_-Product (1TB HDD)

If it weren't for my laptop limitation I'd consider myself a PC gamer already.), so I think I'll go with the AMD combo. EDIT: Also, is they anything else I might need? I mean, keyboard and mouse are a given (I have a mouse), but what about something for Wireless Internet? Or anything else? To reiterate: do these lists come with absolutly everything that I'll need to not only build a computer, but to immediately use for everything one uses a computer for after building without having to buy anything afterwords?
for wireless internet you need a wireless receiver it just comes with what you see above, so that means no keyboard and mouse [editline]11th January 2011[/editline] of course, you need an OS, and the motherboard comes with at least 1 SATA cable

As for wireless, I'm a little lost on what exactly is needed. you mean those wireless pci devices, right? is there a recommended brand or model? (thankfully the mobo you suggested has a pci slot)
plenty of cheap ones for example this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833130061
Lose XP
well, I ordered the AMD combo Jaehead recommended with the extra bits Flubadoo suggested. I have it all put together although the power supply apparently came DOA, so I might have to reorder it... :frown:

Make sure there isnt a safety plastic tab that needs to be pulled before it can be turns on. Also make sure (Ive done this many times) That the power supply switch is in the correct position, or it might be the wall outlet. All seem like pretty obvious things but it can happen
well the LED on the mobo lights up when the power supply is plugged in and switched on, but attempting to start it up only causes the PSU to click for a second and nothing happens. EDIT: I'm asking the Tech Support area of FP about this before I decide any further.
