• Best CPU for a 2000$ computer?

Hey guys, so for christmas my moms told me I have 2000$ to build a computer that will last 3 - 5 years. I was thinking something along the line of the i5 -750, but is there anything else I should look out for? Thanks!
Probably this. Just overclock it a little. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117225 [editline]08:43PM[/editline] You are going to get a lot of debates unless you put the rest of a build up though.
Most of facepunch is gonna yell at you because a VERY decent computer doesn't need to be that expensive.

Thanks!
what do you mean "last 3-5 years". if you mean lifespan, my friends P4 server is still running 24/7 since he bough it (Which was more than 5 years ago). the new chips should last even longer than P4 if you mean future proofing, then no. also You don't need to spend 2000 dollars on a "SUPER PC". A good system with a 5870 would be more than you'll ever really need/want.
His mother is buying it for him, make it $1999.99.

Future proofing in the computer world doesn't exist. Why not build a ~1200$ PC and use the rest on games/monitor/etc?
Lick-her licence? :smug:
Future proofing in the computer world doesn't exist. Why not build a ~1200$ PC and use the rest on games/monitor/etc?
with an i5-750, no, it doesn't. also, whose to say he doesn't already have games/monitor/etc?
i5 750, 4gb DDR3 @ >1333MHz, a 5870 or two. Something along those lines.
You can get a 5870 with i5 750 build for around $1300. Do you really need to spend $2000
Naw, if you're dropping two grand on a computer, throw another 30bux on the CPU and get an X3450
Why all the x3450 is a simple clock increase. 5870 is a waste of money, just get a 5850 and overclock. Same performance for $100 less.
mind explaining why a sever cpu will do better for windows apps rather than a normal i7 or i5
Because it has all the features of an i7 for cheaper. It's a good deal.
Because it has all the features of an i7 for cheaper. It's a good deal.
I mean sure if you are going to leave it in a set environment and not OC and want a strict chip/bus ratio
I mean sure if you are going to leave it in a set environment and not OC and want a strict chip/bus ratio
The Xeon would do much better for overclocking because of the higher binning and the lower heat output.
spend 900-1000 dollars and max everything out in games, spend the other 1000 on upgrades in the coming years should last around 3-4 years that way
I mean sure if you are going to leave it in a set environment and not OC and want a strict chip/bus ratio
the 19 multi isn't that bad. And you can turn on turbo boost for an extra multi. [editline]04:18AM[/editline] for christs sake use the x3440 not the x3450, waste of cash (@ above post)
I wish I could get this: http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0302727 The price of an i5 but there's no shipping, need to pick it up at a local store.
spend 900-1000 dollars and max everything out in games, spend the other 1000 on upgrades in the coming years should last around 3-4 years that way
I was just about to say that. :raise: But yeah, save some money for upgrading later.

don't get an SSD, SSDs are pointless
Sorry for not saying anything here. Nah, it was my mom's, as in she's going to be getting me. Also, I'm getting the 5850 <3, up here in chilly chilly Canada, the 5870 is like 110$ more, is it really worth it? Okay, I was thinking the i5 750, it can't be that bad, and I can just wait till the price for 8 gigs goes down up upgrade. That sound good? P.S. I'm running a P4 with an 9500GT. and 2.5 gigs of ram. :ohdear: can't wait for this computer.
