What are the cons of having an intel pentium D proccssor/ what is the main difference between this an a lCore 2 duo?
Pentium has crippled cache.
If you're looking to buy a new processor don't even consider a Pentium D.
I guess Core 2 Duos are designed much better and will perform better. I have a Pentium D, but that's the best my MoBo would take. If you have the option for either, get the Core 2.
I have exactly the same problem as you, but I would like to know how much difference it makes.
O and also, if your mobo has lga775(the socket in which a pentium d usually is in) you can change to core 2 duo or even quad

I'm guessing quite a bit. You could overclock a Pentium D to 4Ghz and it still wont outperform a lower clocked Core 2 Duo. It's all about how they changed the Microarchitecture from Netburst (Derrived from the Pentium 4) to an older architecture based of the Pentium 3. This later was renamed to the core architecture, hence the name Core 2 Duo.
I have a Pentium D and it is a hunk of shit.
Everything runs really bad, i cannot get above 30fps in a game, and i have a 9600gt
everything
hot, high power draw, low cache

Not to mention that Athlon 64 X2 crushed it in almost everything.
It is basically two Pentium 4s duct taped together with HT disabled. Cache isn't actually an issue on these CPUs, but it makes shit all difference if the architecture is crap. I suspect even an E4400 will easily outperform the most powerful Pentium D.

Core architecture isn't older than Netburst.
Also Pentium Ds are still on Netburst, and as such they inherit the absolutely shittacular performance of Pentium 4s in general - they're garbage.
so basically its all about the architechure?

Architecture, caches, power. (Heat isn't an issue because they're supposed to run hot)
Not worth it.
Sucks for me then.
Lateeee response.
