How good are 3D TVs? I know this isn't a very word filled thread, but I do wonder how good they are and if they are worth the money.
Cheap 3D TVs have horrific ghosting, at least that's the case with my dad's Philips. 3D movies were cool and all, but cinemas still hold the lead there.

How much was your dads phillips?
I don't see the point it 3D TVs or see the appeal of owning one, they're pretty gimmicky in my opinion.
Better off spending that kind of money on a higher end LED TV.
I have a Samsung UN55D8000. I used the 3D for the first 2 months and haven't since. It's definitely cool but I never watch movies so I don't have a use for it.
Normal HDTV looks absolutely beautiful on it though. I watch all the prime time stuff and the colors and clarity really show.

I agree with this. 3D is best for the theater. Most movies aren't 3D anyways not to mention very few providers even offer 3D programming. Save your money for a better LED and a kickin sound system.

I have a Mitsubishi 3D rear projection. It was like ~$900. We bought it because it is cheap, and the 3D was a bonus. The 3D is pretty cool at first, but it gets kind of old. Glasses are expensive, there are not a lot of 3d titles out there, etc. And if you want to watch 3d sports, forget about it. We get espn 3d. Watching football is a god-awful nightmare. Headaches, headaches everywhere. But it's pretty cool for a while. I agree with Smoot, better off getting a nice LED tv and a nice sound system.

I own a sharp quattron 3D set. First testing with Half/FULL SBS and half O/U, ghosting/convergence was garbage as fuck, motion lag was also horrible. ( Used PS3 to stream it to TV ). Then I tested half O/U directly on a USB stick connected to TV, gotten better.
Finally.... Nvidia HDMI V1.4A Full BluRAY 3D ISO through my PC to the set, the 3D was amazing, no headaches, no weird motion problems, and ghosting was basically minimal ( broad daylight )
TLDR: Source is very important when it comes to playing 3D. As well as lighting conditions.
Just because it says 3D doesn't mean that's all it can be used for. Generally, if it's a decent 3D tv, it will have a much better picture than a non-3D of similar models.
In my opinion I would much rather go to the cinema and watch it, I have to take the glasses off every 15 mins or so, Or else I get headaches. And sometimes even sickness. Therefore I couldn't sit there watching it all night long.

Happens in theaters, doesn't happen on my Sharp 60" C8470U

Why are there no cables going to the TV
is the power being channeled to it through some kind of wizard spell

Through the wall or the plug is right behind the tv.
If you really wanted one, the black friday deals were fucking amazing this year.
I bought a 55" Sony LED 3D TV for only $899 from sears. I was about to buy a 55" samsung for $1500 until they were sold out of them.

We have a similar system, we channeled all of the cables (HDMI, Power, USB extender) through a tube in the wall. It's really nice looking, but it would be really hard to do without planning for it while designing the room.

False, you can buy wall plates that have square holes and you just punch out a square inch or two behind it in the drywall and you can do it. Costs less than $5.

That would be an amazing idea.
Except for the fact that whoever wired our house with coaxial must have been high because all the cables meet underneath the refrigerator in the kitchen, so cable management in that respect is already fucked.
