• Need help with old laptop

I have this old laptop that i've stored in the attic but just recently brung it down and wiped off all the cobwebs. I kind of want it to work and see if there would be any way for me to make it more efficient without using money. I'm not very technology-savvy so I will say stuff that will probably cause a facepalm. Here are some details about it: Compaq, Windows XP. 2002 Kind of slow, freezes every once in awhile, somewhat big computer, etc. I don't know what else to say
Depending on the hardware inside and if you have the product key/restore disks for the operating system, you may be able to revive the notebook to some working order. Considering it's a 2002 model, I am gonna guess it has either a Pentium 4/Celeron processor or the AMD equivalent. I would recommend downloading something like the Ultimate Boot CD and giving it a run through the correct manufacturer hard drive test and a MEMTEST86 for your memory. If that passes and you have the ability to reinstall the operating system fresh then it will be up and running like when it was purchased on day one. You could reuse the OS on there as it is, but after 8 years and I'm sure plenty of wear and tear, I would recommend just reinstalling the OS for a clean start.
