And my internet explorer is still running. So yeah, anyway on reverting this accident? [editline]19th November 2010[/editline] It's not funny :saddowns:
Sys restore would fix it. Unless rstrui.exe opened in WinRAR :v: Download this and merge the two reg files. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2073343/.exe.zip
Google 'Unassociate File Types' and then find a guide for what OS you're using.
Google 'Unassociate File Types' and then find a guide for what OS you're using.
And then when it tells you to use filetypechanger.exe he can open it in WinRAR. Which is why the .reg method is the best way.
I did this once. I had to edit the registry(I have no idea how I opened regedit) and remove the .exe association from a ton of shit. [editline]19th November 2010[/editline] Oh wait, no, I made .lnk files open with winRAR, not .exe.
Windows really shouldn't let you do this.
Windows key + R, then type 'regedit'. I can't help you much from there, but that SHOULD get regedit going. If it opens it in winrar, I really don't know what to say.
What do the porgrams look like in winrar? Out of interest.

I dual booted another windows, but I still want to fix my old one.
[img_thumb]http://i53.tinypic.com/2m6sec4.png[/img_thumb] I dual booted another windows, but I still want to fix my old one.
Edit the registry hives using your second installation
Boot into your other windows. Open up regedit select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click File > Load Hive. Browse to that previous installations drive and go to \Windows\System32\config and open the file names SOFTWARE. If it's hidden type SOFTWARE into the File Name box. Open. Give it some name. Now go to HKLM\HiveName\Classes\exefile. Make sure the data looks like this: exefile: (Default) REG_SZ Application EditFlags REG_BINARY 38 07 00 00 FriendlyTypeName REG_EXPAND_SZ @%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,-10156 exefile > DefaultIcon: (Default) REG_SZ %1 exefile > shell > open: EditFlags REG_BINARY 00 00 00 00 exefile > shell > open > command: (Default) REG_SZ "%1" %* IsolatedCommand REG_SZ "%1" %* exefile > shell > runas: HasLUAShield REG_SZ exefile > shell > runas > command: (Default) REG_SZ "%1" %* IsolatedCommand REG_SZ "%1" %* exefile > shell > runasuser: (Default) REG_SZ @shell32.dll,-50944 Extended REG_SZ SuppressionPolicyEx REG_SZ {F211AA05-D4DF-4370-A2A0-9F19C09756A7} exefile > shell > runasuser > command: DelegateExecute REG_SZ {ea72d00e-4960-42fa-ba92-7792a7944c1d} exefile > shellex > ContextMenuHandlers > CmdLineExt: (Default) REG_SZ {F0407C3D-349C-42B9-B83E-821E31623DF9} exefile > shellex > ContextMenuHandlers > Compatibility: (Default) REG_SZ {1d27f844-3a1f-4410-85ac-14651078412d} exefile > shellex > DropHandler: (Default) REG_SZ {86C86720-42A0-1069-A2E8-08002B30309D} exefile > shellex > PropertySheetHandlers > ShimLayer Property Page: (Default) REG_SZ {513D916F-2A8E-4F51-AEAB-0CBC76FB1AF8}
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set) ^ that is in: exefile > shell > runasuser > command exefile > shell > runas exefile > shell > open should I delete it or is it supposed to be there?
Leave it as is. Just make sure the ones above are in their with the same values.
What would happen if you deleted winrar?
What would happen if you deleted winrar?
Probably this: What should Windows open this file with? *Select a program from a list on your computer *Search the internet for ways to open the extension *.exe.
Atleast you didnt make every exe file open with hl2 like I did accidentally once. That shit was fun to fix, because every exe file i opened accadentally opened with hl2.exe, which them promptly crashed.
doesn't winrar open with a exe? what happens when you open something?
doesn't winrar open with a exe? what happens when you open something?
Resonance cascade.
doesn't winrar open with a exe? what happens when you open something?
time paradox
What would happen if you deleted winrar?
Brb deleting WinRAR. [editline]20th November 2010[/editline]
Leave it as is. Just make sure the ones above are in their with the same values.
They are. now what?
Why would Windows even let you change what opens an exe? That doesn't even make sense
What really doesn't make sense is that extensions are still being used in Windows to determine file type.
What really doesn't make sense is that extensions are still being used in Windows to determine file type.
Indeed. Every good OS lets you name your binaries hueg.penis and still run them. Edit: I'm being serious here guys, stop rating funny :saddowns:
Probably this: What should Windows open this file with? *Select a program from a list on your computer *Search the internet for ways to open the extension *.exe.
"What should Windows use to open the file iexplore.exe?"
I haven't read all the previous posts, but have you tried the fix suggested on this page: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm I know it says XP, but it might work for Vista/7/whatever it was that you're on. And also from that page:
If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.

They are. now what?
Then it should be fixed. If not it was a User based class definition in which case we'll have to edit another hive.
It's not fixed.
Boot into your other windows. Open up regedit select HKEY_USERS. Click File > Load Hive. Browse to that previous installations drive and go to \Users\<User Account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows and open the file named UsrClass.dat. If it's hidden type UsrClass.dat into the File Name box. Open. Give it some name. Now go to HKU\HiveName\. If .exe and exefile are there, delete them. Try booting into previous install.
.exe and exefile are not there.
