In need for a new graphics card - Hardware & Software

My ASUS Geforce 8800GT started malfunctioning yesterday and I draw the conclusion that I need a new GPU. My budget is ranged at about 250-350$ converted from Swedish kronor. (1500-2500kr) I want something better than the 8800GT obviously and it doesn't have to be Nvidia one and only but I do prefer one if it's possible. My specs: ASUS Maximus Formula Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.7GHz (overclocked) ASUS Geforce 8800GT 4GB RAM, Corsair 550W PSU, Corsair and a Antec 900 as a chassi. I haven't got a direct view on what a good graphics card is considered today and somewhat future safe, or if I should go bang for the buck or just mere brand quality.

Radeon 5850, best price for performance($300). But if you want to stick with Nvidia you can easily find a GTX285 for $350. Also, 550W is fine for both of these cards.

Thanks. I was unsure whether 550W what enough or not. I will look up both cards and see if I can find them.

Both the 285 and 5850 are nice cards If you grab a BFG 285 you get a very long warranty (10 yrs)

If you need to choose between 285 and 5850, 5850 is clearly a winner. Cheaper, faster, consumes less power and has dx11. Get it unless you can find a 285 cheaper.

It's leaning towards a 5850 but it's just that the prices differs a lot more than in the US because of Swedens current state of economy. So finding a card costing that costs the same in the US/another country is highly unlikely. [editline]05:03PM[/editline] oh and I can't even find the damn card. No one has got it in stock.

5850 or 5870 or 5770 in crossfire if your mobo supports it. Good luck getting a 5850 though bout to drive 40 miles into the city because a store carrys one :wink:

Okay, those two series aside. How about a 250 card? That would serve its' purpose until (if) I get a 5870/GTX285 card.

Well if you're willing to fork over around $100 for a temporary replacement you might as well buy a 5850 on EBAY saw a few with international shipping to total $380
