Couldn't think of a more descriptive title, this is just so weird. Every day when I turn my computer on it runs really terribly. It takes forever to start up then when it does it lags really badly. If I try to play audio it comes out super distorted and choppy, similar to a bad radio reception. I don't even want to imagine what would happen if I tried playing a game. Even typing this post is choppy.
This always happens when I first launch my computer, then later in the day, if I turn it off and leave it alone for like 30 mins, then turn it on again it works. Like, when it's working I can run pretty new games with no performance problems.
I launched task manager and I noticed that the severity of the choppiness is directly linked to CPU %, the lower the CPU % the less lag.
Maybe my CPU is just dying. It's a horrendous CPU: "Genuine Intel CPU 2160 @ 1.80 GHz". I got it 5 years ago and it was already very outdated back then. The rest of my computer components are much better (2 1TB hard drives, an ATI 5850) so maybe my CPU just can't keep up and is slowly dying or something?
I'm getting a new laptop for christmas anyway so I guess this isn't a big deal but it's really annoying having to deal with this everyday, so I'm trying to see if I can fix it. Any thoughts? Thanks
Have you tried reinstalling Windows?

no, is that complicated?
no, is that complicated?
No. It is not complicated. There is a high possibility your installation of Windows on that computer has broke somewhere.
How old is the installation of Windows on that computer?
I'd also like to point out the possibility that your CPU is bottlenecking your graphics card. Somebody will have to confirm that for me though; I could be wrong
The CPU definitely is bottlenecking, but that's not his problem right now. He needs to reinstall Windows from the descriptions. Just back up all your data first, pop in the Windows installation disk, delete the existing Windows partition, and install over it

can you install it without a disk? I don't think I have one of those

Yes, the Windows 7 USB Download Tool will allow you to run the Windows 8/7/Vista installer from a memory stick, if you have the ISO.
Just make sure you have the windows key. This is usually on a sticker somewhere on the case or inside of the side panel.
Open cmd.exe and type systeminfo and press enter. Then give us a screenshot of your info including the installation date.

That list of Hotifxes goes on for a long time, do you need to see those too?

I don't think I have that since I have Vista, got this computer before 7 came out
Your system seems to allocate very little ram when compared to what is available so this could indicate a problem but I don't think so. I think that it is very possible that some virus is causing the problems since it's been more than three years since you installed vista and it could have entered your system after downloading a rogue torrent file. It could also be that windows vista has aged and is collapsing under its own weight and needs to be reinstalled.

Ok thanks. I doubt that I would have a virus since I only download green or pink skull torrents, but I guess it's possible. I feel like the second scenario is more likely though, since this computer's really old and I've put a lot of strain on it since I started doing a lot of editing work lately.
What would be the best way for me to reinstall windows? I found some blank CD with "windows recovery" scribbled on it, but if that doesn't work I don't have any CD or USB or anything to reinstall it with.
Download MBAM and scan while the PC is in safe mode.
Then once you're sure there are no viruses, download CCleaner and clear all the temporary files and other shit out.
Install all windows updates.
Uninstall any programs that you don't use any more.
Last but not least, download IObit smart defrag 2 and run a "Defrag and fully optimize"
Should give you a MASSIVE improvement.

But you really should get a CPU upgrade

And if you're doing video editing, maybe get some more RAM in there.
If you don't want to use IObit then Defraggler is pretty good too.
Auslogics masterrace.
