• Decent laptop for college/light gaming, under u$s 1000

Dear FP'ers, I'm in the market for a laptop. I'll use it mostly for work (via a VM), but also for college and why not a little light gaming. My budget is 1000 bucks tops (my job will cover 50% of the laptop cost w00t!), but I don't know which laptop to get... I'm not into any particular brand or anything; as long as the processor is good, I can put in some more RAM if needed and it has a decent screen size, I'm buying it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

I bought it like month ago. Really good build quality, amazing cooling and performance. Scores 9500 on 3dmark06 default which is pretty fucking good for 1366x768 laptop
Gaming Laptop ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHA Funny.
No shut up. [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] 1366x768 with 5650m which performs as 5750m when overclocked is pretty cool for gaming. Gaming in laptops was joke back in 2008. It gets around 25fps on high with no AA and 4xAF. [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] Anyway you won't probably game if you are not at home and don't have outlet power. So 6hrs battery life doesn't worth that performance.
Ok so far, I'm choosing the HP solely for the 15.6" screen size and the Radeon graphics card Wow you can run Metro 2033 on High on the HP? That's more than enough "light gaming" for me :v:
Yes high, but Very High is quite laggy
Yes high, but Very High is quite laggy
I've been looking for some more reviews on that laptop; some guy says he can play Crysis on High with no AA and AF, at 40 FPS average... WOW!
Macbook [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] I am gonna get so many Dumbs and Disagrees...
Reason you are getting boxes and crosses is because there is no MacBook for <$1000, not counting educational discounts. With them, however, you can easily get a decent MacBook or Air that will play Source games decently, which I would classify as 'light' gaming.
Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate it :D [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] So far, it's the HP, followed by the Asus UL80... I wonder if that HP comes in black
you'd be fine with either.

Not saying MB's are shitty, but the GPU really sucks asscocks. And no, it's not up for discussion.
And no, it's not up for discussion.
That's a pretty stupid thing to say.
That's a pretty stupid thing to say.
He's right though. There really is no discussion there. The current line of macbooks have comparatively bad graphic chips to PCs. (Not that this demonstrates my objectiveness on the issue but I am typing this on my 08 mbp)
That's a pretty stupid thing to say.
Not when it's true. It isn't a better card just because you discuss how good it is.
What? The white macbook is $999. And no, I'm not exactly an apple fan, but if I could play l4d on my laptop with a Turion 64 1.8 ghz with a ati 1150 at 30 fps, I think a mac with 2.2(I think?) ghz core 2 duo with a 3200M can play it pretty well. Also, built in long lasting battery.
Alright so as of right now, I'm going for the HP... let's see what my boss have to say about it! :D
Get the HP TM-2. It has a decent GPU (with the right model), i5 (with the right model), excellent battery life, and it's a tablet (Wacom digitizer + capacitive touchscreen). All for around 700 bucks. http://livehotdeals.com/HP-TouchSmart-tm2t-series_32054
Capacitive touchscreen?! Fuck yeah, get that thing!

I'm looking into either the MBP 13", Asus A72JR XT1, or the Alienware m11x Gaming is primarily the issue, I cannot find reviews for the Asus, and I really would rather have a DVD drive. Atleast with the MBP, you know what you are getting. Heck, it'll play GTAiv quite well. I'm in the same position, but here are some more options you can consider.
