I did a lot of blacksmithing during the beta and this is pretty true - but the thing they're not mentioning is how hard it is to make gear of that quality. The basic progression is once you've crafted your weapon for example with all of it's traits etc, you can hone it - which needs materials. The more you use the higher % chance for it to work, which in theory makes it easy to get 100% chance but some of the higher tier honing mats were impossible to find (I think I only found like 1 or 2 in a couple of beta sessions). So without a serious investment into crafting you're better off earning at least some of your gear through quests
I guess it's they're way of balancing the adventurer vs. the craftsman. This way a crafter can't make some awesome sword really easily that took a dungeon runner like six runs to get. Since he needs a bunch of materials that are difficult to obtain.
At least it's what they're trying to do I think, I have a feeling this is going to end up unbalanced and kind of, well.. Shitty.
Why couldn't Skyrim have had this... Crafting weapons is nigh useless in my experience unless you legitimately can't find a certain weapon.

What are you talking about, smithing is one of the reasons magic is garbage in compared to weapons in skyrim :v:
You can make maces that do more than 5x the damage of the best spell and cost no mana to swing, then you can enchant either more damage or life steal or both if you're good enough at it. Crafting was amazingly powerful in skyrim, no doubt about that

Only way I can see it become unbalanced is if there's a large group working together to mass produce endgame weapons. So I would imagine it would take some time for all of that to happen.

Generally you need to trash, say, a tonne of blue quality weapons to get blue quality honing materials. So the crafted one might be better but you probably had to find 60 weapons to smelt down and get the mats to make it :v:

The economy is going to be hilarious since you know that people will fucking be factory lining this shit and forming workers unions.
