Copybotting has been a thing for like, a decade now. There's probably other forms of it out there but being able to just duplicate items is an ancient technique passed on by generations of content thieves and griefers.
From reading the article (they say it has something to do with crashing the sim) I'm guessing they've figured out when stuff saves and managed to exploit it.
When it comes to copybotting, not sure what they do though, its as easy as using a special viewer and just... saving it. It's that easy. [editline]6th January 2018[/editline] You can even cache rip any texture. The moment your viewer caches it it's on your drive and you just need to open the file and browse through it.
