New title: iPad - MiFi or Extra ££ for 3G model?
So, as some of you may or may not know Apple prices in the UK seem to be significantly higher than in the US, consequently its an extra £100 for a 3G model over a WiFi Model, but still I wouldn't mind the 3G access.
I recently researched about MiFi on the UK Three network, it seems to work out cheaper, but I was wondering....
It seems obvious to choose the MiFi option because of it being cheaper, but does it have it's downsides and does anyone here on FP own a MiFi box?
iPad 16gb WiFi: £429
iPad 16gb WiFi+3G: £529

So facepunch, what are your views on MiFi?
I basically found out in a subtle way that I'm getting an iPad for Christmas, even though I want one (Yes I'm 15, 16 in January), I do not think this is an ideal time to get it. 2nd Gen is likely to be released in the new year, how do I influence my mum to send it back and wait for the 2nd Gen release without letting her know that I know that shes got it?
get a job.
get a job.
Yeh cause I can get a job at 15....
And did you even read it properly?
get a job.
You do know it's not piss easy to get a job when you are 15/16. I'm 16 and a lot of the people at my school can't find jobs anywhere.
OP, tell her its a waste of money buying the 1st generation when the 2nd one is just around the corner.
Be grateful you get one and don't have to buy it yourself.
Get the 1st gen now and sell it when the 2nd gen comes out
Or you know, get her to buy it close to Christmas and just make sure she keeps the receipt. That way if Apple does release a new version in the New Year, which they won't; you'll be able to return yours and get the new one. Apple extend their returns policy over Christmas time to let people return unwanted presents. This is a very good reason for them NOT to release the new one in January.
Where did you hear they are releasing a second gen iPad in January. Apple usually always releases their stuff in the July-September range, and basically what Hexxeh said.

The iPad Gen 1 got announced January 2010 and got released around March/April, so I and quite a few communities I read seem to think Apple have a good chance of doing the same in 2011 and announce a new generation of iPad.
Oh and she bought it from Argos so she can pay it off over time, and the return policy is 30 days, would Apple let you return it to their store or would you be forced to return it to Argos?
forced to return to argos
if I buy a Sony tv from Argos can I return it to A Sony shop? No, that's common sense. Keep talking about how great the new iPad coming out in march is and how nobody in their right mind would buy the current one etc etc
I actually think the iPad is a complete waste if you don't get the one that has 3G as well.

If you aren't traveling much then there's no real point, especially since it's a pretty steep price jump for the 3G model.
I'm often in places without WiFi, so it'd be great to have internet anywhere I go.

The whole 'no contract' thing is also very nice.

Yes you can you idiot

Not at all. I got the wifi only model because my phone can tether wirelessly (as well as most phones on the market today)

Paper round is the only job you can really get in my area if you are under 16, and offer's don't come around that often as everyone else my age has the same idea.

Apple's prices in the UK seem to be a lot more than in the US, but even so it's an extra £100 for a 3G model. I plan on buying a MiFi router instead as it is a cheaper option but still allows 3G internet on the go.

Yeh forget what I said, I was tired.
My phone is really old and shitty, so I can't tether. I guess that's why I want the 3G+WiFi version. Which I am probably getting for Christmas.
OP I'd go with the WiFi+3G. You'd have to carry around that giant thing that must require batteries of some sort, and then a giant iPad. Why not just pay the $100 down for the 3G built in?

It's not really giant, it's smaller than an iPod Touch or around the same size
You can't return iPads/iTouches/etc to Argos. Read the ToS.

Even though that is no longer the topic discussion, thanks for that piece of info :]
