Not sure exactly how long this has been going on. Lately (i.e. past two days) I've been having some graphics trouble - games suddenly running much worse - a system restore (just to a few days prior) sorted that out. But then it came back. As I looked for a solution, I downloaded Speccy and was alarmed at how hot the laptop seemed to be running. I have HP CoolSense (some sort of built-in cooling app) running and turned the battery to HP Recommended (although it's plugged in so that shouldn't matter).
It seems to be "stabilizing" at 80 - the fan stops running at that point. However, it jumps into the 90s whenever I do something involving the CPU, like opening a new program or loading a website. When I boot up a game it goes to 100-105
I have two main concerns:
- Is it accurate? This is alarmingly hot - other websites I've looked at suggest that 40 is good and 80-90 should be cooking my CPU where it sits. However, the fan seems to be running fine - it kicks on when the temperature rises - albeit several dozen degrees behind. When I pick up my laptop (which supposedly has been running at 80+ degrees C for over 20 minutes now) it doesn't even feel hot to the touch. I turned off my laptop overnight and now the games are running fine again.
- How do I fix it? My laptop is relatively new (albeit refurbished) and doesn't really have much bloatware running. If this is a problem with Speccy, that also should probably be addressed somehow.
The fan stops running at 80? That's not right. Unfortunately though those temperatures are right on track with what one would expect out of an HP with an APU.
