[img_thumb]http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/1481/fixitnernetplease.jpg[/img_thumb] So I'm using this Tenda wireless usb card thing and I'm trying to connect to my router upstairs. It works on every other machine in the house, including ones in the same room. It seems to suggest pretty much everywhere that the internet is in fact working, but it's obviously not. It's been happening for weeks and weeks, now, and I can't stand it. I've tried using window's wireless software, aswell as linksys', all giving similar results. Really at a loss as to how to fix it and I'm generally seriously fucking tired of it, now.
Reformat & reinstall windows.
Reformat & reinstall windows.
fun. Any other less arduous ideas? :frown: How long would all that take, and would it involve wiping my hdd? Really clueless when it comes to this shit.

I had this happen once when i installed IE 8 on my old computer, i did everything i could to try to fix it, but somehow my internet settings got fucked beyond belief and there was no way to fix it other than reformatting and reinstalling. Hold on one second, i think there's a program you should try before reinstalling though. Let me find it first...
Try looking on their website for the latest drivers I would only reformat if nothing else works
Try this http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Try this http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Thanks  Downloading now. Networks are really my weakest point on computers and I wasn't very knowledgeable to begin with.

There's just so many things that could cause your computer to not connect that it's not even funny. That's why i suggested reinstalling because that fixes everything and gives you a fresh start. Plus reformatting/reinstalling is a good thing to do every 2 to 3 months or so.
No luck. :frown: I'm making a folder full of all the stuff I want to keep to put on my ipod and carry over once it's reformatted. I hate hate hate HATE HATE networks. I think I'll reformat tomorrow because I'm so tired. I take it I'll need a windows CD... which I have no idea as to the location of.

If you have a key, then it's not illegal to download a windows iso from, say, thepiratebay.org.

Seems like it may just be worth shelling out for windows 7 but I'd rather not use all the money I got today on something so domestic :frown:

What the fuuuuck, posting off the machine in question at the moment. It seems to have really short periods where it works... anyway, my stepbrother has just tried resetting my ip in the cmd window and once I've finished backing up I'll reset and see if it seems any better.
When you connect you shouldn't get a "169.254......." ip, as this is a default IP that comes if you don't have DHCP enabled. What kind of IP are you supposed to be getting? 192.168.X.X? 172.16.X.X? 10.X.X.X? Check on your brothers computer to see what he is getting. If the DHCP still fails, try giving yourself a static IP (say at home you use 192.168.1.X (class C network), then you'd want to give yourself an IP of 192.168.1.10 for example, where 10 is your ip number that has to be unique on the network (nobody else can use it!). If it still fails it's something else, but I assume it's because the accesspoint you're connecting to, either for some weird reason doesn't respond to DHCP, or your wireless card is either too shit to send DHCP requests, or isn't set up to do it.
When all else fails just do a reset of your ipconfig, often it works wonders. ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
