• Black screen if brightness is lower than 100%

Title pretty much says it all, my backlight seems to refuse to work as soon as I turn my brightness down from the maximum. Any advice how I could test if this is a hardware problem / which component is faulty (I'm guessing the inverter) ? Edit: I was talking about a laptop, so examining the screen is kind of out of the question. I can confirm though that my laptop can still output to HDMI even while my screen is black.
Could we get some specs here?

What I meant about specs was just model, you could have been talking about a TV, a computer monitor, a phone... Pretty much everything with a monitor.
Sorry, my bad. I updated the OP so it's clear I'm talking about a laptop.
Well, if I was you - if you're still under warranty, try sending it in. If you fiddled with anything and want to send it in - they might not want to help you.
I did not fiddle with anything, as a matter of fact my laptop just came back from their repair centre, since I had dropped it a month ago. This also means that I'm pretty sure I'm not under warranty (physical damage). I'm most of all interested if this could be a software problem, in which case I could try reinstalling Windows etc., or a hardware problem, in which case Sony didn't repair my laptop well enough last time.
Do you hear any sound from the screen when it goes on / off, I suspect your problem is the inverter rather than software.
Do you hear any sound from the screen when it goes on / off, I suspect your problem is the inverter rather than software.
I do hear sound and I can see on an external display just fine, only the monitor my laptop itself is black.
