As if the game was going anywhere decent anyway.
$2,500,000,000 sounds a bit much, what other game company would be bought for that sum?
$2,500,000,000 sounds a bit much, what other game company would be bought for that sum?
I think they're buying the brand more than anything, "FROM THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT YOU MINECRAFT COMES X!!"
I think they're buying the brand more than anything, "FROM THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT YOU MINECRAFT COMES X!!"
Maybe, but i'm pretty sure it's just for the Minecraft IP.
rip nonexistent modding api I thought it was just slow, now I know it's just not happening at all
rip nonexistent modding api I thought it was just slow, now I know it's just not happening at all
Ya, not like, they revamping big parts of the base to get performance rolling with the API, no. Have you played 1.8?
rip nonexistent modding api I thought it was just slow, now I know it's just not happening at all
From what I understand, the team who works on the more technical side of Minecraft and the modding API, every time they want to add something, it's like pushing against a brick wall because of the current way things are done. One step backwards, two steps forward etc etc.
Maybe, but i'm pretty sure it's just for the Minecraft IP.
[del]Did you not even read the title? They're buying Mojang, the company.[/del]
Did you not even read the title? They're buying Mojang, the company.
In which they get the Minecraft IP
is notch going to buy one of those islands in dubai and vacation forever?
$2,500,000,000 sounds a bit much, what other game company would be bought for that sum?
It's larger than the bid EA made for TakeTwo Interactive in 2008
In which they get the Minecraft IP
Ironically I missread his post as "just the" instead of "just for the".
And then once everyone leaves Mojang to make their own new studios they'd have spent 2.5 billion for just a name.
And then once everyone leaves Mojang to make their own new studios they'd have spent 2.5 billion for just a name.
The studio isn't worth the $2.5billion but the ip sure is. Minecraft is a cash cow. I frequently see kids, teens, and adults in minecraft clothing and kids playing with foam swords. The game is still selling a lot and is sure to sell more on the PS4 and X1. Mojang may be independent but minecraft is very mainstream
$2,500,000,000 sounds a bit much, what other game company would be bought for that sum?
This will be the most expensive video game company acquired by Microsoft. Prior to this offer, the most expensive game company that they had acquired was Rare which they bought back in 2002 for $375mil. The next closest acquisition that had a listed monetary figure was when EA bought Popcap Games for $750mil in consideration (cash and shares) in 2011. I think Microsoft are offering so much is because how recogniseable the Minecraft brand has become in pop culture. Millions of units of the video game on various platforms have been sold as well as a huge amount of merchandise as well.
I just thought of something. There are a few things that refrence minecraft because, as far as I know, notch is cool with that sort of thing. But once microsoft's calling the shots, will they send their army of lawyers out into the world? What I mean is, something like that minecraft level in borderlands, whereas notch was cool with that, would microsoft start suing people, retroactively even?
Maybe we can at least get some actual development now
Whelp, we might as say good bye to industrialcraft and buildcraft because Microsoft is no doubly going to introduce a patch that will make modding minecraft impossible and break all mods along with shutting down the modding community and flush the hard-work of who knows how many modders down the toilet.
social integration into minecraft press the share button on your keyboard to send pix of your latest redstone project to facebook, twitter, or friendster!
But what about Myspace support?!?
It's still surreal to think that I first heard about this small indie game on a Facepunch thread over four years ago, and now it's a huge pop culture phenomenon apparently worth over 2 billion dollars.

Instead of Not Enough Items or Too Many Items, the mod that lets you look up items and their recipes, they will have you "Bing" for items.
is notch going to buy one of those islands in dubai and vacation forever?
imagine actually being in a position where you could do something like this, all because you made a simple little video game by fluke i make fun of notch a lot but i cant say i don't envy him
And here I am just playing infiniminer
Minecraft will be known as Microcraft. Micro of course stands not only for Microsoft, but Microtransaction, and Craft will stand for what you can make using the materials you mined with your premium pickaxe 2 years ago, Valve was valued at $2.5Bn, and Valve brings a lot to the table. So what the fuck is Microsoft expecting to get? Minecraft is everywhere already
This is kind of sad. Microsoft could have invested that money into a bunch of indie studios like Sony.
I don't see it making Microsoft any money. It's like becoming the producer of a band that was a one hit wonder a few years prior. I'll be very surprised if Microsoft breaks even
I think they're buying the brand more than anything, "FROM THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT YOU MINECRAFT COMES X!!"
That didn't work too well for Scrolls though, did it? Meanwhile generic zombie survival crafting games sell like hotcakes without the need for any brand recognition.
