For a long time my internet has been slow at around 6 o'clock at night, and by slow i am nearly unable to browse the internet. Recently this has been occurring for longer and later into the night, increasing my frustration.
If anyone is able to help me with why this may be happening and how it can be resolved it would be appreciated.
All computers in my household experience this and some are on wireless, some are not.
Information:
ISP - TPG (60gb On peak/60gb Off peak)
Router - Netgear DG834G
Usually speed is 700kb/s ++ and during a slow time i think it can get as slow as 4kb/s - 30kb/s
The router says the speed of the modem is the same even when the nets slow...
"Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 9409 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 943 kbps
VPI 8
VCI 35"
Copy + pasted from router info.
Thanks.
This is due to high-traffic for your ISP in your area, quite alot of people experience it during peak time because many ISP's networks are insufficient. The fact that it is occuring for longer periods at a time, is odd - in theory it should be 'inconsistant'. Could be your ISP limiting your speeds during peak time, perhaps.
Could be, at first i thought it might have been one of the computers automatic updates but that didnt make much sense, i checked that anyway and they weren't.
If it's happening everyday at around a specific time then it is more than likely just a lot of traffic in your area.
Only solution would be to change ISP's that don't use this sort of infrastructure or get a better plan so you don't get throttled as much.
post this on Whirlpool for better results
reps from TPG read the forums, might get you closer to an explanation than these guys
Otherwise you can try upgrading your routers firmware, I needed to do this to get ppoe to work on my router (TPG use HUWEI DSLAMs and apparently they're not top shit) . I'd also hunt for any environmental things that could be interfering with your network, networked services on other pcs, physical/electrical interference etc (even try a different modem/router)
If you sync at 9mpbs, and you get ~700kb/s most of the time, this is about spot on (you lost x % for tcp overhead), but it shouldn't have any reason to slow down on their end (especially not to speeds mentioned)
Switch to a different ISP. Some have higher contingency ratios than others, which simply means mmore people connect to the same 'point' at the exchange
