I'm running arch. This is what happens when I enter the command startx. I have added HAL and dbus to rc.conf and installed the xf86-video-vesa (I think thats what its called) driver. Anything else I can try?

did you add hal in uppercase?
try lowercase. Linux is case sensitive.
I'm pretty sure I added it in lowercase. I'll check.

Hm, okay... Does that laptop have an Intel graphics chipset?
I don't think I could get X to start until I had installed specific video drivers. I run an integrated intel chip.

No, it has an Nvidia 9200M GE. What other drivers could I use, the proprietary ones? Or something else?
Use the Nvidia proprietary drivers.
Or the open source ones.

I've always used the proprietary drivers.
Nvidia have really good Linux drivers, closed source but really fast.
So yeah, Use them.
