Yeah, I know its a shit camera phone picture. I'm running arch. This is what happens when I enter the command startx. I have added HAL and dbus to rc.conf and installed the xf86-video-vesa (I think thats what its called) driver. Anything else I can try? [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Sorry if this is a dumb question.
did you add hal in uppercase? try lowercase. Linux is case sensitive.
I'm pretty sure I added it in lowercase. I'll check. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] Yeah, its lowercase.
Hm, okay... Does that laptop have an Intel graphics chipset?
I don't think I could get X to start until I had installed specific video drivers. I run an integrated intel chip.
Hm, okay... Does that laptop have an Intel graphics chipset?
No, it has an Nvidia 9200M GE. What other drivers could I use, the proprietary ones? Or something else?
Use the Nvidia proprietary drivers. Or the open source ones. Proprietary: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia Open Source: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau I've always used the proprietary drivers.
Nvidia have really good Linux drivers, closed source but really fast. So yeah, Use them.
