• 1080i to 1080p - Worth it?

For Christmas, I got a 32 inch LCD tv with 1080p capability, and as I don't have an HDMI cable, I'm playing games on an Xbox 360 Elite at 1080i. Is there really enough difference between 1080i and 1080p to go out and purchase an HDMI cable? Also, if I have this whole thing completely mixed up, please correct me, for I tend to be a dumbass at times.
From what I've heard, no, it doesn't matter. But if you want, you can go out and buy the cables anyways, if only to save some space behind your TV.
1080i without a HDMI cable? Is that even possible? The answer to your question is YES go out and get a HD cable, the difference is mind blowing. Best £15 you'll ever spend.
If you want to play games in 1080p @ 60FPS, go with a screen like that. Well, you wont find many games doing that for consoles anyway. [editline]12:25AM[/editline] And lol, 1080i without HDMI. Just no...
The Xbox is set on 1080i, so I don't know why you guys say it doesn't work. Or maybe you suggest it looks better with an HDMI cord?
eh, the 360 supports 1080p over component
eh, the 360 supports 1080p over component
The screen blacks out when I try to select it in the options.
The screen blacks out when I try to select it in the options.
What is your TV's make/model? [editline]11:31PM[/editline] Regardless, if you have the option, HDMI is nearly always a better choice, you get a sharper image even if it's at the same resolution
Nobody seems to think of that he's TV doesn't support native 1080p, it only support 1080p downscaled to 720p. I would use the included Component cable and set the Xbox output resolution to 720p. That would give enough Image quality.

Not sure of the make/model. [editline]11:33PM[/editline]
Nobody seems to think of that he's TV doesn't support native 1080p, it only support 1080p downscaled to 720p. It's rare that a new HDTV only supports 1080p over HDMI and not component
Nobody seems to think of that he's TV doesn't support native 1080p, it only support 1080p downscaled to 720p. It's a JVC TV, I'll see if I can figure out a make or a model. [editline]11:40PM[/editline] http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=427446 Here's the TV.

Sometimes TV Manufacturers write 1080p support on TVs, but they mean that it can handle an 1080p input signal and rescale it. It seems that your TV can handle it "the right way" though. What you should think of is that on that screen size you probably wont see any difference on 1080p and 720p if you doesn't sit very close to you TV. 720p is often better that 1080i for an moving Image. On the other hand, an HDMI cable isn't directly expensive.
That's not correct
Not always, but I have seen many forum users believe that they have 1080p support on their TV, but only have an TV with 720p panel, supporting 1080p downscaling. And I still don't think that he will be able to see any image quality improvement between 1080p and 720p if he isn't extremely close to his TV. I can't see any big difference between 1080p and 720p on my 46" screen from normal watching distance.
It doesn't matter anyway. Games that say they support 1080p are just 720p upscaled images. Do you really think an Xbox or PS3 could handle full 1920x1080?
There really isn't a difference in 1080p and 1080i. A HDMI cord is a good investment though since it frees up some cable space. Its all personal preference though.
OP it's not worth it, but if you do get an HDMI cable, don't go to Gamestop and buy their $50 "Ultra High Def Super Cable". Just get a $10 one on Newegg.

PS3 actually has some half decent games running at 1080p, like wipeout hd and katamari forever (and others). Xbox 360 puts 1080p on the back of every game box, but PS3 games only show 1080p if they actually are.
For whatever reason, it appears to only support 1080p over HDMI then, odd.
Maybe JVC have a side gig in the over priced HDMI cable business and it's a ploy to make more money. [editline]02:47AM[/editline] According to the page below, only 6 Xbox 360 titles are native 1080p http://www.makeyougohmm.com/xbox360-1080p-games/ EDIT 2 : Here is a MUCH better list ; http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241
It still looks good. Going from a old ass TV to this, I'm fine with it not being native. Besides, I may get a Blu ray player or something soon.
I use 1080i. I tried out an HDMI cable and saw no difference. I went back to the regular cables because with the hdmi I can't hook up to the surround sound. BTW, don't Elites come with HDMI?

[editline]04:01AM[/editline] the majority of ps3 games output 1080p, although some just upscale 720 for the sake of framerate. 360, on the other hand, is mostly upscaled 720p.
HDMI is worth it, always. Great image, and sound goes through the same cable. Eliminates cable clutter and newegg.com has HDMI cables for dirt-cheap.

You do know that 1080i and 1080p are somewhat the same 1080i - Interlaced Encoding 1080p - Progressive Your better off with 1080p for starters, Try 1080i, the difference isn't so much noticeable *In my case* otherwise stick to 720p
I wouldn't say majority, only 26 PS3 games support full 1080p. [editline]11:08PM[/editline] automerge
